Stanford Can Now Manipulate Your Mind While You're Under Anesthesia
At Stanford, they now tell you before you go under that you might dream, and the moment you wake up, somebody asks what you saw. Of 452 surgery patients, more than two in three came back with a dream.
This video follows how a blackout became something people are put under for. A 26-year-old who relived a knife attack on the operating table and slept normally the next night. An anesthesiologist who started asking his patients what they'd dreamed. Twelve of 260 patients under general anesthesia who answered a voice and never remembered it. A mother whose anesthesiologist asked her mid-surgery whether she was having happy dreams. A depression trial where the people on placebo got better too. Healthy volunteers held unarousable for thirty minutes. A beer company that tried to get into people's dreams with a video, and a lab in Madrid that made the frightening part of a memory fade with one dose of propofol.
It ends on the trial Stanford is running now, the one with a federal health agency's name on it.
