We Almost Lost Voyager 1's Signal… But Then It Found Something
Part 1 of this story, what Voyager measured beyond the heliopause: https://youtu.be/oFBHYq4Wn7A
Voyager 1 is running out of power, out of memory, and out of time — and in these exact years it is hearing the space between the stars more clearly than any human ever has. The strange part isn't the machine breaking down. It's what the same failing machine is still picking up, 15 billion miles away, that almost no one talks about.
In 2012 Voyager 1 crossed the heliopause into interstellar space and proved the void isn't empty — it's a thin, faint, restless plasma you can actually measure. Then a Cornell graduate student, Stella Ocker, went back through data everyone had written off as silent and found a persistent, monotone "hum" of interstellar gas that had been there since at least 2017, steady the whole time. Its exact cause is still not settled.
Years later the same spacecraft started answering in nonsense — a repeating loop of zeros and the number 377 — after a single 46-year-old memory chip failed. This is the story of the repair NASA pulled off across a 45-hour round-trip delay, and why the instrument that heard the hum is the exact same machine that is now dying, one instrument switched off at a time.
