What Is a Restomod? (And Why You'd Want One)

A restomod is a classic truck restored with modern parts underneath: engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, interior. The body is what you keep. Almost everything else changes.

Spencer from Fat Fender Garage walks the show floor at the Triple Crown of Rodding in Nashville and explains what a restomod is, how it differs from a nut-and-bolt restoration, and why people build them. The reasons come in two parts. First is safety and reliability: brakes, steering, suspension, and not wondering whether a 50-year-old truck is going to make it home. Second is comfort: AC, audio that isn't blown door speakers, seats you can sit in for more than three hours, gauges you can trust.

He also covers how the scene got here, from Corvette suspension swaps to the modern engine swaps that are everywhere on the floor now, and clears up the idea that a restomod has to have show-quality paint. It doesn't. That's the difference between our two build series.
