The United States of America, Denmark, and Greenland are set to sign an agreement later today aimed at strengthening Arctic and North Atlantic security, easing tensions that erupted over President Donald Trump's repeated calls for Greenland to become part of the United States. According to Associated Press Danish public broadcaster DR reported Tuesday that the agreement involves the establishment of two new U.S. bases in Greenland and noted that the U.S. has repeatedly shown interest in the airport at the Narsarsuaq settlement in southern Greenland. The governments did not provide details of the accord ahead of a signing ceremony on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York later on Tuesday. The agreement appeared set to reduce tensions between the U.S., Denmark and the European Union that erupted over Trump's repeated calls for Greenland to become part of the United States. For months, Trump expressed his desire for Greenland to become part of the United States, and issued threats to seize the semiautonomous territory of Denmark, a NATO ally. For decades, the United States had a far larger presence in Greenland. Since 1945, the U.S. military presence in Greenland has decreased from thousands of soldiers across more than 17 bases and installations on the island to just the remote Pituffik Space Base in the northwest with roughly 200 soldiers today.
