In the fall, Russia will try to exploit the poor weather, which complicates drone operations, to intensify its attacks. Specifically, the occupiers may once again use armored vehicles in the Dobropillia area, Forbes reports .
The publication noted that today, the zone of almost complete destruction of equipment reaches 30 km. Kamikaze drones are active in this zone. Their simple design and use of inexpensive commercial components allow Ukraine to produce drones in large quantities and quickly modify them as new technologies emerge. Their small size also makes them difficult to detect and allows them to maneuver close to the ground and around obstacles. However, FPV drones have a number of vulnerabilities, primarily related to weather. Drones fly poorly in strong winds, rain, or snow. And cameras are almost useless in fog.
"Russia intends to use these periods of reduced drone presence to launch large-scale mechanized attacks aimed at overcoming Ukrainian defenses," the article states. The authors believe that since weather conditions limit the capabilities of Ukrainian drones, Russia is upgrading its equipment to make it more resistant to drones. They cite General Denis Prokopenko, commander of the 1st Azov Corps, as saying that Russian troops are preparing a large number of armored vehicles for the autumn campaign. They are equipping them with active and reactive defense systems, electronic warfare systems, anti-drone cages, mine-clearing equipment, and bulldozer blades.
"Russia has been experimenting with some of these defenses during limited mechanized assaults over the past month, likely to determine needs for a much larger autumn campaign," the authors write. It is believed that the Ukrainian Defense Forces will increase reconnaissance and attempt to identify Russian equipment in advance to disrupt assault attempts. Reconnaissance is conducted up to 40-50 kilometers behind the front line. "However, given the scale of Russian preparations, Ukraine will not be able to strike every deployment location and every piece of equipment," journalists believe.
Furthermore, the Ukrainian army could modify its drones with FPV cameras to operate more effectively in adverse weather conditions, although these improvements could increase their cost and limit the number of available aircraft. Ukraine could also integrate other technologies into its defenses, including ground robots and sensors capable of tracking Russian approaches in conditions of limited aerial surveillance. As a reminder, in July, the Russian army launched one of the largest tank breakthrough attempts in recent memory in the Dobropillya sector . It was unsuccessful: nine tanks, two armored vehicles, three Grad launchers were destroyed, and several dozen occupiers were killed.
At the same time, Russian tanks were protected by active defense systems that were effective against drones. More drones were needed to destroy such tanks. The Russians are also considering options for enhancing tank defense against drone attacks using Vzlet-M and Fakel flashbang grenades .
