Casa Fazenda Bocaina: A Timber Structure in Dialogue with the Landscape
Set at an altitude of 1,530 meters, near the Serra da Bocaina National Park in Brazil, Casa Fazenda Bocaina is a house conceived in direct response to an extraordinary mountainous landscape. Designed by Arquipélago Arquitetos and Mariana Caires, in close collaboration with ITA Engenharia em Madeira, the project overlooks the Paraíba Valley and the distant Mantiqueira mountain range, yet finds its point of origin in something much smaller: a solitary tree growing from a rock on the sloping grassland.
Rather than imposing itself on this vast setting, the house is delicately elevated above the ground, preserving the natural course of the terrain and uninterrupted views across the valley. Its curved geometry follows the existing contour lines while also responding structurally to the strong winds at high altitude. Built from glued laminated timber, the house is conceived as a slender and highly precise structural system in which architecture and engineering become inseparable. The landscape gives form to the architecture, and its form becomes its structure.
A rigorous sequence of prefabricated timber frames, cantilevered verandas, tension elements and spatial trusses minimizes material use while creating the impression of a pavilion suspended above the terrain. Prefabrication was fundamental to construction on such a remote site, allowing the timber structure to be produced under controlled conditions before being transported and assembled by specialized carpenters.
Despite its sophisticated engineering, Casa Fazenda Bocaina remains deeply connected to the rural architecture of the region. Ceramic roof tiles, reclaimed peroba rosa wood, timber floors and details produced by local carpenters establish a dialogue between advanced timber construction and the traditional language of the Brazilian countryside. A symmetrical plan organizes social and private areas, while deep eaves and carefully positioned openings control sunlight and reinforce the continuous relationship between interior and landscape.
In this film, we take a poetic and cinematic journey through Casa Fazenda Bocaina, moving across its elevated timber structure, intimate interiors, cantilevered verandas and expansive views to reveal how architecture, engineering and landscape come together as a single experience. From a distance, the house appears as a precise architectural object within the mountains. Up close, its materials, details and familiar rural language root it firmly in the culture of the region. The result is a house that could only exist here, shaped by this particular terrain, climate and landscape.
