Effevu House is situated within the rural landscape of the foothills of the Romagna region, in Modigliana. The project involves the restoration of an existing stone farmhouse and barn, transforming them into a contemporary residential complex. It stems from a desire to preserve the memory of the site by removing incongruous outbuildings and re-establishing a clearer relationship between the architecture, the hillside, and the surrounding landscape.
The intervention focuses on the connection between the existing structures and the new volume. The historic farmhouse and barn have been preserved and enhanced, while the extension rests upon the terrain, redefining the rural courtyard through new living spaces. Rather than imitating the existing architecture, the contemporary additions establish a distinct dialogue with it—achieved through proportions, materials, the rhythm of the openings, and construction precision.
The steep slope allows for the articulation of various internal and external levels, while large glass surfaces offer ever-changing perspectives of the valley. Porticoes, pergolas, and terraces expand the connection between the interior and exterior, creating a visual continuity with the landscape. On the side facing the valley, a large terrace serves as a prime space for engaging with the natural environment.
Stone and wood form the material core of the project. The stone—a feature of the original construction—is reinterpreted in the new sections through a more precise, contemporary laying technique. Oak is used throughout, appearing in the roof beams, window frames, the kitchen, and custom-designed furnishings. Travertine flooring, laid in a running bond pattern, reinforces the horizontal lines of the architecture and guides the eye toward the landscape. The Casa Effevu project is therefore based on a limited palette of materials and recurring details, which together establish a unified architectural language without erasing the distinctions between the old and the new. In this way, the architecture becomes an act of stitching together—a process in which rural heritage, contemporary transformation, and the quality of living coexist in a carefully measured balance.
