A major wildfire has continued to rage uncontrollably on Croatia’s island of Brač for a fourth consecutive day, with the blaze already consuming more than 4,000 hectares of forest. Local authorities have described the situation as a disaster as powerful winds continue to drive the flames across the island. The burned area now accounts for roughly 10% of Brač’s entire territory, highlighting the unprecedented scale of the fire. Videos shared on social media capture the staggering scale of the disaster, showing enormous walls of fire sweeping across the island and vast areas of forest engulfed in flames. The footage offers a dramatic view of the blaze as firefighters struggle to contain its relentless advance. The emergency has forced authorities to evacuate around 500 people, including tourists, as the advancing flames threaten populated areas and other vulnerable locations. Several people have been injured, with at least one victim reported to be in serious condition. The firefighting operation has mobilized a large force of emergency personnel and equipment. The fire front has extended for approximately 35–40 kilometers. Around 500 residents and tourists have been evacuated from areas threatened by the blaze;

According to preliminary information, lightning may have triggered the blaze. Exceptionally dry conditions, combined with strong winds, are believed to have contributed to the fire’s rapid and extensive spread, making containment increasingly difficult. The disaster on Brač comes amid a broader wave of wildfires affecting southern Europe. Spain, Italy and several other countries have also been dealing with major fires, as dry conditions, high temperatures and strong winds continue to create dangerous conditions for the rapid spread of flames.
