AI GeneratedThe New York Yankees face a complex roster dilemma as Anthony Volpe returns from injury with a standout performance at second base. His sudden success, including a grand slam and six RBIs, challenges existing plans for the postseason lineup and creates a competition for playing time among several talented players.
He is shocking everybody as the New York Yankees now have a huge decision to make going forward
by Aaron Boone as their team just got shaken up in a big way with multiple players gearing
up to come back from injuries and also questions surrounding some of the young talent and where
exactly everyone is going to play in the playoffs.
There has been a new wrench thrown into the plans after something that nobody could have
seen coming has happened and that has come in the form of Anthony Volpe coming back and
showing that maybe he's not the future Derek Jeter of the Yankees like some people once
believed in.
But this man just proved that he damn well can be the second baseman of the future for
the team and we're going to break down how this has all happened, what fans are thinking
right now, what the Yankees are going to do with their postseason lineup and honestly
why what the postseason lineup is going to be is the best case scenario for the Yankees.
So we're going to dive right into this video guys.

And guys, speaking of every day, Anthony Volpe has not been an everyday player for the first
time in his career this season and well frankly it made sense.
Coming off of a year last year where he was injured and just was not performing in the
field, not hitting and the only thing he had going for him was base running.
He was in danger of losing his position and it took him a while to come back from injury.
Now he had it briefly but the Yankees did eventually send him down, replacing him with
George Lombard Jr. who has become not only a fan favorite but one of the most impactful
Yankees instantly as the rookie even though he's going through a little bit of a worse
stretch now.
He did just hit a grand slam so it's a little bit over.
But he did go through a little bit of a bad stretch but the man has been excellent.
A great fielder who overall has shown that he belongs as an everyday player and well
is an everyday player.
While Volpe, he hadn't for a while.
There's a lot of questions surrounding Anthony Volpe as he does have a 1.2 award this season
and now a 2.51 batting average.
Coming into the game though yesterday he had a 2.40 and his numbers were not great.
They were better but now things have flipped around as Anthony Volpe not only turned the
world on its head when he had six RBIs in his return to Yankee Stadium but also that
featured a grand slam.
He went three for four and if you want to know how crazy those numbers are, Katie Sharp
mentioned on a fun fact that Volpe's the first Yankee with at least three hits, five RBIs
and one stolen base in a game since Alex Rodriguez did it on August 14, 2010.
That's right.
It has been 16 years since someone has put up these numbers and Volpe, he fits well at
second base.
Look, this has been a thing.
Some guys can't play shortstop very well but they can move to second and play great baseball.
Shortstop's exhausting both physically and mentally and maybe Volpe's just better handled
for second base.
He was playing it in the minors, he kept hitting home runs, he had a 2.60 average.
Things were going really, really well so now seeing him perform like this has shown that
maybe we'll see the numbers jump and there's a guy who's fielding was already good, five
outs above average on the year playing mainly shortstop.
The fielding run value was in the 80th percentile of baseball overall but now at second base
he fits even better because he doesn't have a great arm but he's a really good athlete
and has a good glove for second base.
He works there.
The question is though, can he stick around the position?
I mean the Yankees like Jose Caballero was a super utility guy, they're going to keep
him in that role and it makes sense to have him as a super utility guy.
He'll be someone who's on the bench in the postseason ready to come in to play third
base, shortstop, second base, left field, right field, center field, whatever you need
him to do, Caballero can do it.
Pinch runner potentially, sometimes a pinch hitter, like Ryan McVann's in the game and
the lefty comes in, they might throw Cabi in there.
I mean obviously it depends, typically they might throw Elliot Ramos in there and then
put Cabi in after but of course we'll talk about that more in a little bit of a second.
But there is a lot of questions that now surround this with Anthony Bowlby and Bowlby said himself,
I thought I was never going to be back up here.
So I'm trying to make the most of it and the most he has made of it is now there's a lot
of questions.
Brian Hoke even mentioned saying, with Jazz Chisholm saying earlier Thursday that he intends
to return during the club's next homestand, there are still no long-term promises about
Bowlby's playing time.
Boone offered several variations of we'll see when quizzed on the topic.
Bowlby understands, a month ago, he didn't know if he'd make it back to Yankee Stadium
at all.
For now, being here is enough, but I think he should stay here personally.
I think it's hard to argue that Anthony Bowlby shouldn't be within the Yankees during the
postseason run.
I mean, we'll go position by position because it's fun to do.
Very quickly, I do just want to say something about Jazz though overall, is that Jazz has
been playing very good baseball over his last 30 games, hitting with a .271 average
and a .770 OPS.
He had an awful start to the season, even more than an awful start, he had an awful
run for the majority of the season, but he has gotten it together and if he can keep
it going off the injury, well then, it's hard to not argue that he belongs in second base
because those numbers are very good, especially when it comes to the elite club he has and
all of the great things that Jazz does, but they got options.
Alright, obviously we know the pitching staff's Cam Schlittler, we know it's Max Freed, Garrett
Cole, Carlos Redon, that's the four pitchers, the bullpen, we've talked about this a billion
times on this channel, we don't have to go over that, but we know Austin Wells is going
to be behind the plate, we know that Ali Sanchez is going to be the backup catcher, so that's
a spot on the bench that's a catcher.
First base will be some mix of Luis Garcia and Ben Rice, one of the DH-ing, probably
Rice DH-ing Garcia playing first, Goldie will be around, he'll be on the bench as well.
That already only leaves two bench spots.
This is where things get very interesting, because you got three guys who you kind of
want to use there.
Now, I'm assuming Judge is back in the outfield, I'm assuming Spencer Jones is in center field
and that Cody Bellinger is obviously going to be in left field.
So we know what the outfield looks like.
Do you put another outfielder on your bench, an Elia Ramos, and then you have one of Volpe
and Caballero to look at.
Because Jazz, I imagine, is playing second base.
There's also a world where what the Yankees want to do is have Jazz play second base when
a righty's pitching, and have Volpe play second base when a lefty's pitching.
And there's a good argument that that's the move the Yankees are going to make.
They love doing the lefty-righty mix-ups, and frankly, I think they will.
Now, you also have Ryan McMahon at third base.
Does he stick around there?
He is a veteran, there's a good argument for it.
George is going to be playing shortstop.
Second base is the big question mark, and does third base get impacted by it?
That's where we really have to lie, and honestly, it's hard to argue that Volpe doesn't belong
up in the majors.
I mean, he can play second, he can be your backup shortstop, but what do you do with
Caballero?
What do you do with Elia Ramos?
You have so many guys.
Do you send Ali Sanchez down and tell Ben Rice, who's DH-ing, get ready, you may have
to step in and catch.
I honestly wouldn't be shocked if the Yankees try that out, so they can have so many different
options.
But also, let's look at things the other way.
If they were to have Volpe, Caballero, Ramos all coming off the bench now, you need Goldie
there.
What is the common denominator about those four guys?
Something the Yankees don't like.
They're all righties.
The Yankees won't want that.
I mean, yeah, you'll still have a ton of lefties out in the field between Jones, between Bailey,
between Rice, between Garcia.
Well, Rice isn't in the field, but he's DH-ing, you know what I mean.
Jazz, McMahon, basically everyone that's not Judge and George are all lefties.
So you can mix it up.
That kind of eases the issue a bit.
You can, if you're facing a lefty, you know that Goldie is going to be batting first in
the order.
Is it a DH?
Maybe.
But what do you do with Garcia and Rice then?
The Yankees are now in a problem where they have too many guys who are playing well.
They won't know what to fully do in the upcoming days.
The biggest thing to look at, though, and this is not anti-Volpe, because I am happy
for Volpe.
I love that he's playing well.
He's a Yankee.
I'm of course going to root for him.
It was one game.
We're going to have to wait.
We're going to have to see.
But if Volpe keeps it up at second base, he's not only going to have a chance to play this
position at points this season, the Yankees are damn well going to look at him as a way
to save money.
Maybe not extend Jazz and move forward with Volpe at second, George at short, and have
your middle infield set, because if Volpe's working and that middle infield is working,
the Yankees can spend money on third base.
The Yankees can spend money on a catcher.
It gives them other areas, and that'd be great to see, too.
So I'm hoping it works out for Volpe, both for the Yankees and for Volpe's sake.
Seems like a great guy.
I'm really happy that he really did find some stride, especially saying he didn't know if
he'd ever get back here.
So great to see.
I'm rooting for Volpe.
