The New York Yankees have made multiple major moves and this was inevitable to happen after
we got a big update on Jazz Chisholm Jr. who has an injury and Aaron Boone and the team
took very little time to make a move that fans knew was going to come and it does have
an impact on George Lombard Jr. and how the rest of his season plays out as Lombard had
been dealing with an injury and had a few errors.
Questioning a lot surrounding the Yankees and where they're going to be going after
this.
Are they going to keep Lombard in his spot?
Well, now more questions are raised about that as well with the return of a man who
many Yankee fans are very split on and is the most controversial Yankee out there right
now.
Guys, before we jump into the video make sure to go ahead and subscribe because 66% of you
guys watching this video are not yet subscribed and we have free Yankee videos coming out
every single day for you guys and you don't want to miss out on any of the news because
this is a big part of the season.
Jumping into the video guys, we all knew that Anthony Volpe would eventually get the call
back to the major leagues in some sense.
The Yankees have been working Volpe at second base a little bit as shortstop has its new
star of the future with George Lombard Jr. but Lombard did deal with an injury and has
been struggling a little bit recently which raises even more questions after the Yankees.
Well, prior to tonight's game the Yankees made the following roster moves.
They recalled infielder Anthony Volpe from AAA and placed Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the 10-day
injured list retroactive to the ninth or the nine-day injured list with a right thumb sprain.
Obviously these moves are big because we heard Jazz went down with a thumb injury and it
didn't take a detective to learn who was going to get called up.
It was going to be Volpe.
Look, frankly, here's the deal.
Do the Yankees need another second baseman when Jazz went down?
Honestly, no, they don't.
They have Jose Caballero who can play the position.
They have Ahmed Rosario who can play the position.
They have guys who can do it, but calling Volpe up does make sense because he is a righty
and also because he can play shortstop as well.
Given the Yankees multiple guys who can play multiple different positions, which is something
we know they like, but also it does beg the question, what exactly is Anthony Volpe's
role going to be with the Yankees now that he is back up?
Is he playing for keeps a spot to be on this playoff roster when the team evidently does
make the playoffs?
Because Jazz, he has been less of an everyday mainstay, unlike the last two years since
he's joined the team, so there have certainly been some questions there.
But diving into Volpe, it definitely is interesting to see because, I mean, overall, the man has
not had a great season right here.
Those games played are way, way, way off and also those numbers across the board are off.
But with Volpe, his season has not been as bad as the prior one, even though it has not
been great by any means.
Still struggling in the field a little bit, Volpe has been better than he was last season.
A .240 batting average is not great with a .646 OPS.
It's really not at all huge numbers for the team so far, and when he got sent down to
the minors, we did see that overall he has been solid there.
An .850 OPS is good, the .260 batting average is kind of what you expect out of a guy who
is more about power than contact, and he is hitting home runs left and right, which
is great to see.
Stealing bases, doing the stuff that Anthony Volpe typically does.
But at the same time, there have been a lot of questions surrounding him.
I mean, overall, we look at the Yankees and Jazz Chisholm has been hot as of recently
before going down.
I mean, overall, he's got a .271 batting average over his last 30 games, where he also has
an OPS of .770.
Those are the kind of numbers you want to see out of Jazz.
Between that and Jazz's excellent glove, it's the type of stuff that makes you very, very
happy with the production that Chisholm has.
So overall, I do like to see stuff like that out of Jazz, just to see that, alright, overall,
the man's ready to go.
He can perform 100%, and is going to be a big part of this playoff roster.
But now he's done with a thumb injury for a bit, and Volpe does get a chance to show,
hey, I still belong here.
I'm still able to perform for the Yankees overall, and now he's getting a shot at second
base.
Look, Volpe's fielding has not been as bad as it's been in prior years.
I mean, it's much better this season, even at shortstop, but then the Yankees, when they
sent him down to the minors, it was clear they were going to give him reps at second
base, and he's played some second base, he's played some shortstop, he's stayed ready at
both positions, and honestly, it makes sense to do exactly that.
Because looking at Volpe overall, he's a talented player.
I mean, the man really has some stuff to work with.
He's a good athlete, and there's no reason why he shouldn't be a good fielder at second
base.
So, if this works, the Yankees do get someone to platoon for second base if they really
want to.
Obviously, again, I think a lot of us are more in the Jose Caballero train.
Cabi is a better baserunner and also a better fielder in general, so I, too, kind of prefer
Caballero.
But still, there's a lot that goes into this.
I mean, even seeing George Lombard Jr. get impacted, as Lombard did say he found out
Volpe was being recalled after tonight's game, or yesterday's game, when a reporter asked
him if it would be awkward, and he said, I wouldn't say awkward.
We know what the baseball world is like.
Anything can happen.
Unsurprisingly, George Lombard Jr. giving a very professional answer, and it does raise
questions considering Aaron Boone's affinity for Anthony Volpe.
What happens to George Lombard Jr.?
I mean, look, let's be real.
Lombard had a great start, but over the last 10, 15 games, over his last 15 games, not
great baseball at all.
A 173 batting average and a 507 OPS is not what you want to see out of George Lombard.
But, at the same time, he's someone who has been talented.
He had the little stretch of making some errors, he dealt with an injury, but overall, when
he comes back, I do think the expectations are still pretty high for Lombard, and frankly,
he is still the best fielding shortstop on the team, and should be an everyday mainstay,
especially because the Yankees have a severe lack of right-handed hitting.
Even with Judge Beck, and now having Volpe, who is helpful, and we're going to explain
why in a moment when it comes to the lefty-righty thing, Lombard is still just such a good fielder
and the future of this position, that I think it makes sense to just keep him in the lineup
now.
I don't really think there's a shortstop on the team that includes Volpe and Caballero
that's better than Lombard.
Lombard's allowed to go through slumps like everyone else in the world, and frankly, I
think that's what this is, just he's slowing down a little.
Still, you know, he's getting into his career still, and he's going to have down moments,
there's no doubt about it.
But look, here's the thing.
When we look at the Yankees, here's why I like adding Volpe, if I'm being honest.
The Yankees certainly could use a guy like Anthony Volpe, who's just a right-handed hitter
you can plug at the back of the batting order.
I mean, look, if you're facing lefties, and we know how the Yankees like to go against
left-handed pitching, you have Volpe, you have Lombard, you have Aaron Judge, you have
Paul Goldschmidt.
You got four righties right there, and yeah, I mean, it definitely differs in how talented
they are at hitting in general.
Judge is as good of a hitter as baseball's seen over the last 15 years, and Goldschmidt's
still actually very effective against lefties.
And then you have Volpe, who hasn't been too effective this year, but you hope that you
could use him there.
And obviously, if a righty comes in, you could throw Jazz out there if Jazz is on the bench
or something like that.
You also have Jose Caballero to use.
You can get up to five righties.
You can put Caballero at third, Lombard at short, Volpe at second, have Goldie either
play first or DH, have Rice do the other one, have Aaron Judge probably out in right field,
because I'm talking playoffs right now.
Have Judge out in right field.
You got Bellinger out in left, who's great against left-handed pitching.
And then probably, I mean, you still just keep Spencer Jones out there.
Kind of depends on how healthy Trent Grisham is, but Jones has been better, and Jones has
actually been very good against lefties as well.
So you could use that lineup, and it does make sense, and it does work.
And I think that overall, having Volpe just gives the Yankees a little bit more versatility.
The real thing is, they just should not overuse him and play him when he shouldn't be playing.
And I do hope the Yankees can find kind of a medium for that, because I think Volpe would
be helpful for the playoffs.
Again, if nothing else, keep him on the bench.
He could play, he could theoretically play shortstop, and he could play second base.
And honestly, I think that's good enough when you know that he's also an excellent baserunner,
that he does add some value to a team that certainly is low on right-handed hitters.
But guys, I do want to hear from you.
Do you like this move that the Yankees made?
How do you feel about Jazz Chisholm?
Will he be able to come back and still be able to play at that level of a .270 batting
average on a .770 OPS, even after the thumb injury?
How will Jazz's fielding be impacted?
Do you think it will be?
Let me know all of that in the comments down below.
I'll be sure to get back to you guys.
Thank you for all the support.
