You have been fighting the wrong thing | Eckhart Tolle

Think of a fridge humming in the corner of a room. After an hour you stop hearing it entirely. Then it clicks off, and the silence is startling, and only then do you realise how much noise there was. Eckhart Tolle uses that to describe something many people live with. Not a crisis, and not the peaks of unhappiness that arrive when something goes wrong. A low, continuous unease underneath everything. A sense that something is missing, or that something here should not be here. Carry it long enough and it stops registering as unhappiness at all. It just becomes the background of your life. Sometimes the answer is practical. If the room is cold, if something in your life genuinely needs to change, then act, and he is direct about the fact that people sometimes avoid acting and quietly prefer the complaint. But often there is nothing obvious to fix. It travels with you, and describing it to other people tends to deepen it rather than lift it. So what actually shifts it? Two things. First, notice where it is coming from. Ask how the unhappiness is arising, and you will usually find a stream of unhappy thoughts running underneath it, feeding the feeling minute by minute. Simply seeing that, without fighting it, tends to make them dissolve. Second, and stranger, stop minding it. If you fully accept that you are unhappy right now, if you genuinely do not need this moment to be different, something changes. Unhappiness needs your resistance to keep its shape. Eckhart goes much further into this in the full session. Join Eckhart Tolle Now to watch. 👇
