Most people never stop thinking. Eckhart Tolle says the reason is not that they cannot. It is that their self is in it. Every thought that arises has a me inside it. The sense of who you are is carried in the stream, so letting the stream stop feels like letting yourself stop, and people are understandably reluctant. That, he says, is what being spiritually asleep means: identified with the thinking, identified with the emotions, with your whole sense of self living in the voice in your head. Then he asks the question the rest of the talk turns on. If you are not your thoughts, and not your emotions, and not even your sense perceptions, who is the one doing the identifying? Something is mistaking itself for the thoughts. That something is the true being of you, and he calls it the deep I. To glimpse it, there has to be a moment when thinking stops without any loss of consciousness. Not falling below thought into sleep. Highly conscious, and no thought activity. Even twenty seconds, he says, and you do not count them, since that would be a thought. What is left of you when you are not telling yourself who or what you are? He is honest that practice may be needed to reach that moment, and that years of meditation may have improved your life even if approached as one more thing to do. But the realisation itself is not a doing. You are already, totally, inseparable from this moment. Seeking it in the future is the one way to miss it. Eckhart goes much further into this in the full session. Join Eckhart Tolle Now to watch. 👇
