After five days of costumes and crowds, Dragon Con is officially over for this
year. The event bringing more than 75,000 people to downtown Atlanta. But
the convention also made a massive difference for a Georgia charity. Fox
says Tara Jabbour joins us live now with more on the story, Tara.
Well, Courtney Dragon Con raised about $320,000 for a local nonprofit here. I
spoke to an organizer who told me that this charitable effort is a part of
what makes the event so special.
Dragon Con may be over for the year, but the convention is leaving behind an
impact on Atlanta. We take over Atlanta, so it's the least we could do to give
it back a little bit this year, raising over $300,000 for Hope Atlanta Dragon
Con matches dollar for dollar up to 150,000. So we wanted to definitely hit
that as well as see is how far we could go past Joe Garland, a spokesperson for
Dragon Con says they chose Hope Atlanta this year because of its mission to
help those who are homeless in Atlanta. Hope Atlanta is focused on the help and
wellness of homeless and helping them get resettled and reset up. We felt
that it made the most sense to really kind of dive in with our neighbors in
our community. Garland says, of course, Dragon Con is about celebrating fandom
from sci fi to TV and everything in between. But she says they also want to
have a bigger purpose beyond fandom to have this extra component. It just felt
natural when you have this many fans together and we have a purpose. We
really seem to bond this year. They also asked fans to bring books. The
convention collected over 5000 books for those in need. They're going to be
distributed without throughout the greater metro area with the intention
of reaching those who cannot get access themselves. Garland says they're happy
to give back to the community that does so much for them. We want to make sure
that Atlanta feels just as as loved as we love being in Atlanta
and Dragon Con will be back in Atlanta next year over Labor Day weekend for
its 41st year reporting live in Atlanta. Terry Jabbour, Fox five News.
Wow, it's a great cause and a pretty impressive amount of money they raised
terror. Thanks.
