Well, right now juve is underway in Brooklyn ahead of today's West Indian
Day parade celebration, and revelers have been making the most of the
holiday, getting an early start since before dawn. Good days. Jessica from
also live in Prospect Lefferts Gardens with all the details. Jess, they got
there early.
They did. Good morning, Natasha and Dan. Well, some of them got here as early
as two this morning, and that's because that's when they had access to this
area. Things kicked off here at six about an hour ago, and you can see
behind me here. Let me step out of the way so you guys can take a look. Good
morning, guys. Everyone here is having a great time. Yes, we're on the news
here. Everyone celebrated today, right? As you can see now, this is a
celebration of Caribbean pride, and you can see behind me here on Empire
Boulevard that the floats are coming down. Barricades are up in a big police
presence here. This is one of Brooklyn's biggest traditions of the
year and the largest celebration of West Indian culture in North America.
Duvet, which marks the beginning of the West Indian American Day Carnival
facilities, travels along Empire Boulevard from Flatbush Avenue to
North Strand Avenue, then south on North Strand Avenue to Rutland Road
and Duvet has controlled access. So spectators have to have to enter. They
have to go through one of 13 checkpoints here, and they are screened
by N. Y. P. D. Officers. Then later this morning at 11, the West Indian
American Day Parade steps off along Eastern Parkway. You can expect lots of
dancing, flag draped floats, colorful costumes and feathers and thousands of
people filling the streets of Brooklyn.
For me, it's my first time. So how do you feel? First time? I love the
atmosphere. I love everything that's going on, and I'm excited about
everything. Everything is exciting. This is also my first time, and I feel
like, you know, for my first time, I'm pretty excited. You know, first walking
in, you know, I was pretty happy. And, you know, when I got here, you know, I
saw a lot of familiar faces, and I was already excited. It's my good sister's
first time, but not at all for me. I've been playing on this block for as long
as I remember. This is our neighborhood. So for the Caribbean community,
Empire Boulevard is where we converge. I'm feeling very happy about it. I just
wish they would go back to when Juve would start at at least 4 a.m. because
after all the security checks and all that, which is good. I have no problem
with that. It lessens our time on the road, you know, because it ends at 11.
For me, there's like an intuitive community, collective energy. And, um, I
think where I am in life right now, I can appreciate it a lot more than maybe
20 years ago or something like that. Um, and I'm looking forward to not
sleeping. That's what
along with the celebration will come a major security presence, and we have
been seeing that all morning long. The N. Y. P. D. Says this will be one of
its largest deployments of the year. Thousands of police officers and
hundreds of community violence prevention staffers and volunteers will
be positioned along the parade route and in surrounding neighborhoods. N. Y. P.
D. Commissioner Jessica Tish says the security measures include drones and
counterterrorism teams. A major change this year, though the parade will end
at 5 30 half hour earlier than in previous years, the commissioner says
the decision was deliberate after shootings and other violence around the
parade route in recent years.
The parade kicks off on Monday at 11 a.m. And will end promptly this year
at 5 30 p.m. That end time is deliberate. Given the history of
violence we have seen on and around the parade route at that hour and
later last year, we saw three separate shooting incidents on or near the
parade route at approximately 5 35 6 15 and 6 30 p.m. Resulting in six people
being shot and back here alive. You're taking a look at the crowds here. The
juve festival way underway. You can see the floats coming towards us there and
the crowd really just enjoying their time. I do have to say, though, Natasha
and Dan, that security is tight right here. People who are trying to get past
the barricades, police officers turning people away. If you don't have a wrist
band, you must have a wristband in order to go and walk along the parade
there in the middle of the street of Empire Boulevard. That's the only way
you're going to get by. But other than that, things so far smooth. People are
really enjoying their morning here. And of course, at 11 a.m. The parade kicks
off. I send things back to both of you. Yeah, it's a great day weather wise for
it. Also, absolutely. Just thanks so much. This morning, federal
investigators are searching for answers after that deadly Amazon cargo plane
crash at Miami International Airport. I mean, this video is just devastating.
Five people were killed. Five others injured after the Boeing 7 67 overran
the runway, crossing a road and slamming into several vehicles. We
want to get to good days. Kelly Kennedy. She's been looking into this so far
this morning. Kelly, what are you learning? Yeah, good morning, Natasha
and Dan. Right now, there are still a lot of questions, including exactly why
that plane couldn't stop. Now, the NTSB is expected to hold a press conference
later on today with some updates. But experts say one of the biggest
questions right now is where on that runway the plane actually touched down.
Now take a look at some of this video. The Amazon Prime Air Boeing 7 67 was
coming in from San Juan Puerto Rico when it overran the runway just before
two yesterday afternoon. Now that plane kept on going, crossing a road,
hitting several vehicles and eventually bursting into flames. Five people were
killed. Five others hurt three of them critically. More than 200 emergency
personnel responded with crews rescuing people trapped in cars, including the
pilot and the co pilot who were trapped inside the cockpit. What we
found was a very complex situation here. Um, as you may have seen or may
have heard, the airplane did strike a couple of vehicles that required a
couple of victims that were actually trapped in the vehicles. So a complex
extrication with our technical rescue teams started to occur. In addition to
that, we had a very complex fire engine compartments that were on fire, uh,
including a search and rescue of the pilot and copilot that were trapped in
this aircraft.
Now, investigators are going to be looking at everything from the plane's
maintenance history to the weather and the wind conditions and whether that
jet touched down too far along the runway. Aviation experts telling us if
a plane isn't down with enough runway left to stop safely, that pilots would
typically abort the landing and go around for another attempt. Now,
investigators are also expected to recover and analyze the plane's flight
data and the cockpit voice recorders as they work to piece together those final
moments. Now, something else that we're learning that's interesting this
morning, the Miami airport is not equipped with arresting systems that
the F. A. A. Has installed at more than 120 airports across the country. Now,
these systems can stop planes that go past the end of a runway and the F. A.
A. Credits them with saving nearly 500 lives. Now, we've also learned that
this was a 32 year old plane originally built to carry passengers before it was
converted into a cargo jet. And that crash also caused a travel mess,
including for passengers flying between south florida and here in new york. More
than 160 flights were canceled and hundreds more delayed. And of course,
as we know, Miami is a major destination from J. F. K. LaGuardia and
Newark. So that's definitely something for new york area travelers to keep an
eye on this morning. Now, Amazon says it will fully cooperate with the
investigation. And again, the N. T. S. V. Chair is expected to hold a news
conference later on today. We'll of course be watching for any new info on
the victims, the crew and what might have caused that plane to run out of
runway. Natasha and Dan, I'll send it back to you. All right, kelly, thank you
very much. A lot of questions for sure. Video. Well, police this morning
investigating the murder of a 27 year old woman in Harlem. Authorities say
Love Williams was pronounced dead during a wellness check inside a
building on 156th Street yesterday. Police say she was found with trauma to
her face and neck. No arrests have been made. And a 19 year old is in critical
condition this morning after a violent crash on the Cross Island Parkway in
Queens and left five people in the hospital. All right, here's what we're
learning this morning. Police say the driver of a Toyota Camry clipped the
back of a Honda Accord near 154th Street. This all happened saturday
night. The Camry overturned, ejecting two passengers, one 16 year old who is
now in stable condition and the 19 year old who's in critical condition. Two
other teenagers in that Toyota and the driver of the other car involved were
all hospitalized but remains stable at this hour. The crash shut down both
directions of the parkway for a couple hours. Police are looking into exactly
what happened with this crash.
