A Turkish cargo vessel, Lider Bordo Mavi, came under a drone attack near the Russian Black Sea port of Tuapse, with five crew members initially reported injured, according to Erkut Çelebi, head of the Trabzon Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The Ro-Ro vessel had sailed from the Turkish port of Samsun carrying cargo bound for Russia. Çelebi said the ship was struck by three drones during the night of August 26. “Lider Bordo Mavi, which departed Samsun carrying cargo to the Russian port of Tuapse, was attacked by drones near Tuapse,” Çelebi said. He added that five crew members were initially reported injured after a fire broke out aboard the vessel. The strikes triggered a fire on board. Videos share on social media show aftermath of the attack and the damage caused to the vessel. Turkish media reported that the ship’s bridge was among the areas damaged. The bridge housed a significant amount of the vessel’s communications equipment, causing contact with the ship to be lost temporarily. Turkish media reported that a Russian helicopter was dispatched to the vessel and that all 20 crew members aboard were evacuated. The ship reportedly sustained serious damage, while another vessel was sent from Samsun to assist with towing it. Çelebi said attacks on commercial vessels operated by Turkish companies in the Black Sea were becoming an increasing concern for the business community. He urged Turkish authorities to strengthen measures to ensure maritime security and provide support to companies that had suffered losses.
