Ukrainian drones disable more than 260 Russian energy facilities in Crimea

Ukrainian drones have knocked out hundreds of energy facilities and restricted the movement of Russia’s shadow fleet in the Black and Azov Seas, reports Robert “Madyar” Brovdi, commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces. Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces (SBS) successfully targeted 27 energy facilities in occupied Crimea and southern Ukraine between August 17 and 22 alone as part of the Crimean Switch Off operation. Overall, from July 1 through August 22, 267 energy infrastructure facilities were knocked out.
The targets included high-voltage substations, gas turbine power plants and gas distribution stations. In particular, the strikes hit: 500 kV Taman power substation in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai. Gas turbine power plants in the Crimean settlements of Karierne and Naumivka. 500 kV Peremoha and 330 kV Khartsyzka substations in Donetsk region. Gas distribution stations in Yevpatoria, Ternivka, Volodymyrivka, and Olenivka. A number of 110 kV substations in Crimea and Donetsk region. The successful missions involved the 412th SBS Brigade Nemesis, the 413th SBS Battalion Raid, the 414th SBS Brigade Madyar’s Birds, the 427th SBS Brigade Rarog, the 20th SBS Brigade K-2, the Phoenix group of Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service, and the 1st Separate SBS Center. At the same time, Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces are carrying out Operation MoLoChKa, aimed at restricting the movement of Russia’s shadow fleet in the Sea of Azov, the Kerch Strait, and the northeastern part of the Black Sea.
In August, Ukrainian drones struck 36 vessels. Overall, from July 6 through August 22, 242 enemy vessels were disabled, including 134 in the Sea of Azov and 108 in the Black Sea. Ukrainian Defense Forces have continued destroying Russian military infrastructure and logistics facilities behind the front lines. As previously reported, on August 22, the Ukrainian military struck the Yeysk oil loading complex in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai. Ukrainian forces successfully hit fuel storage tanks. The facility was actively used by Russian forces to supply Russian army units.
In addition, the Defense Forces began systematically targeting Russian logistics hubs, confirming a strike on OZON warehouses. The attack came after successful strikes on Wildberries’ largest warehouse complexes, which Russian forces had been using for military purposes. President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree opening the way for the Russian state to take temporary control of critical infrastructure found to be inadequately protected from attack.
The decree, published on Monday, would allow Moscow to strip owners of physical and financial control over facilities should it be determined that they are failing to secure them or repair damage quickly. The move comes as Ukraine maintains an intense drone campaign against Russian infrastructure. Under the decree, ownership powers would transfer to Russia’s Federal Agency for State Property Management or another designated body, which would take responsibility for the site’s safety and could conduct an inventory of its assets.
Fuel and energy facilities, including nuclear power, are included under the legislation as well as industry, communications, transport and logistics, public utilities and other facilities deemed essential to state security and economic stability.
Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, but with the front line in eastern Ukraine bogged down, the conflict has become increasingly focused on drone and missile strikes.
Kyiv has found significant success in long-range drone attacks. Its targeting of Russia’s energy infrastructure in particular has produced results, sparking fuel shortages across the country and impacting public opinion and an economy that has been enduring increased international sanctions for close to five years.
