Russian dictator Vladimir Putin understands that if a million people protest outside the Kremlin, it will mean the end of his rule. The main danger for the head of the Russian regime is that Russians' anger could ultimately outweigh the fear of repression. This point of view was voiced by financier and investor William Browder in an interview with the tabloid The Sun.
"The real danger for Putin is that Russia's anger will ultimately outweigh its fear. If a million people march on the Kremlin, he's finished. He understands that this is his greatest danger," the financier stated. According to Browder, the Putin regime previously bought the favor of Russian citizens, but now this option is becoming unavailable due to the Kremlin's dwindling financial resources. As a result, the only tools left in Putin's hands are fear and repression. "We should expect further intensification of repression, perhaps to the point where Russians will need an exit visa just to leave the country, as in the Soviet era," the financier added. The investor noted that while Putin had previously staged elections using the opposition he controlled, he now fears this as well. "Putin used to stage elections using symbolic opposition parties to demonstrate that Russia is a democracy. Now he can't even afford this staged approach, because any slightest admission that things aren't perfect becomes potentially deadly," Browder emphasized.
Browder, stated that Vladimir Putin cannot simply end the war against Ukraine, as this, in his opinion, would threaten his power and security. "If Putin stops the war, he will lose power. He needs the war to stay in power," Browder said . According to him, the Russian dictator will continue to escalate tensions. He is prepared to "burn everything" to maintain his position in the Kremlin. Browder drew parallels between Russia's future development and North Korea, warning that the country could follow an even more severe and isolated scenario. He also stated that the West underestimates Putin's personal motivations. In fact, according to Browder, the Russian dictator, in pursuing his current policies, primarily seeks to preserve his own power and security. Browder stated that US President Donald Trump is doing everything possible to avoid an open confrontation with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. Commenting on Trump's recent interview, Browder recalled how a journalist asked the American leader about Russia sharing intelligence with Iran to target American bases. Instead of a clear and forceful response to the Kremlin leader, Trump doubted the information and intended to clarify the matter with Putin personally.
"It's absolutely clear to me that Trump is on Putin's side. It's obvious to many who are following this ," Browder said. In his opinion, Trump's behavior is not in the national interests of the United States. Browder also suggested that some kind of agreement exists between Trump and Putin, the content of which, he said, may remain unknown. "Whatever this deal is, it forces him to not act in the national interest of the United States when it comes to Russia ," Browder emphasized.
