In this episode we cover the case of the sacred chicken killer. We begin the video by exploring the practice of Roman Augury which involves omen reading using birds. Augury in fact played a large part in Roman religious practice and was even used by armies on campaign. We then turn to an incident during the First Punic War when a Roman commander grew fed up by the outcome of one such omen. He killed the sacred chickens, spiting the gods, and soon after faced disaster in battle. Upon returning to Rome the commander faced trial for his crimes against religion and justice.
