Join me for an early morning walk through Rendcomb, a beautiful old Gloucestershire village tucked into the Churn Valley near Cirencester in the Cotswolds.

The village stretches along the hillside above the River Churn, with old stone buildings, country lanes and the surrounding Cotswold landscape making it a lovely place to explore at the beginning of the day.

Rendcomb has a history stretching back more than 1,000 years. The settlement existed before the Norman Conquest and was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086.

Over the centuries, the Rendcomb estate passed through several important families, including the de la Mares and the landscape around the village gradually developed into what became Rendcomb Park.

One of the village's historic treasures is St Peter's Church. A church has stood here since at least the 12th century, although much of the present building dates from a rebuilding in the early 16th century. Inside is an impressive Norman font that survives from the earlier church.

Above the village stands Rendcomb Park, dominated by the grand Italianate mansion designed by architect Philip Hardwick in the 19th century.

The estate later became home to Rendcomb College, founded by Frederick Noel Hamilton Wills in 1920. For more than a century, the school became an important part of life in Rendcomb before closing in July 2026.
