Eastbury is a small downland village in West Berkshire, around a mile and a half from Lambourn, in an area famous for its rolling chalk countryside and horse racing heritage. The River Lambourn runs through the length of the village and is one of its defining features.

Eastbury's story stretches back much further than its cottages might suggest. Archaeological finds include an Iron Age brooch, Roman coins and Saxon objects, showing that people were living in and around this valley long before the Norman Conquest.

One of the earliest written references to Eastbury appears around 1033 in a charter of King Cnut, which mentions the "tithing of Eastbury". By 1381, Eastbury was a surprisingly substantial settlement, with records suggesting its taxable population was almost as large as nearby Hungerford's at the time.

In the centre of the village stands an old stone cross. Its base dates from the 15th century, although the shaft and cross above it are later. Such crosses were historically used for gatherings and open air religious services.

The Church of St James is considerably younger. Designed by the celebrated Victorian architect George Edmund Street, it was built between 1851 and 1853 on the site of an earlier medieval chapel.

Eastbury also has a literary connection. The First World War poet Edward Thomas lived in the village with his wife Helen. Today, a beautiful engraved glass window in St James' Church commemorates them.
