Join me for an early morning walk through Longborough, a traditional Cotswold village sitting high above the beautiful Evenlode Valley in Gloucestershire.
Longborough is one of those villages that still feels like a proper living community. Old Cotswold stone houses line the lanes, the church stands at the heart of the village and there's still a pub, primary school, village hall and community run shop.
People have lived in this landscape for thousands of years. On nearby Ganborough Hill, early settlers constructed a long barrow around 5,000 years ago, while evidence of a Romano-British settlement has also been discovered within the parish.
By the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, Longborough contained three manors, the largest of which belonged to the King. Two of the manors were later combined and became the property of Hailes Abbey during the 13th century.
Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the estate passed to Thomas Leigh, a former Lord Mayor of London. His family retained the manor for centuries until the estate was eventually sold in 1921.
At the heart of the village stands St James' Church. The present church dates principally from the 12th century, with the earliest surviving written reference dating from 1192.
Another fascinating part of Longborough is the Ashwell, an ancient spring whose name is thought to derive from “Aesc's Well”. For generations it supplied water to the village, with residents collecting their daily water and farmers bringing horses and carts to fill up.
Nearby is Longborough Festival Opera, which has become internationally known for staging major opera productions in its theatre overlooking the Evenlode Valley.
