Help is on the Way...

Good news, everybody.
I hope, I think most of this is good news.
We're going to run down the headlines today.
What's going on, everybody.
Christian Patterson back with another episode of Padres Digest, the show
that is now locked in on us.
Like we're not even kind of going to like, we're making the playoffs.
I see the vision it's happening.
It's all coming together.
We're one game back as of us recording this, I think we're going to be tied
for the wild card as of the end of this day, and I hope you guys are here to
also manifest all of those good vibes.
If you want to like subscribe, comment, share all of those other buttons.
I ain't going to hate you for it.
I ain't going to guilt you for it.
All I'm going to do is still be here day after day talking about the badgers.
First thing that I want to run down of the headlines today is that the sale of
the Padres, the much maligned sale of the Friars to our new glorious ownership
group has a final actual timeframe after many months of shenanigans.
We got this out that the pending sale, the Padres should close sometime this
month, according to John Seidler, the team's control person, he told that to
the times of San Diego, Wednesday of this week, and then later in Thursday
response to a text message, uh, Rob Manfred's office said that it had not
yet been scheduled, but that the.
Uh, approval from all 30 owners would be conducted by call or electronically.
So I think at this point, while there is not a, Oh, it's going to be on the 27th
or on the second or something like, like there may not be a specific day that is
being mentioned here, but this was all sort of shades of opaque and unclear up
until earlier this week and the combo of saying that it's going to happen this
month from Seidler and then baseball saying, yeah, we'll do it electronically
instead of having everybody meet.
I think you can fill in the dots there that are filling the blanks there that
they're going to get it done this month.
They just got to figure out the actual day to do the procedural stuff.
We'll be curious to know on the back end, if there was some degree of
drama with fanatics or whatnot.
But I do think the feeler, like the, like the tentacles of the new ownership
group are already reaching out and, uh, having impact in the Padres right
now, because I think that it's very clear that them taking on my eyes and
Robbie Ray's salary is not the side or is not the side of their route.
That's the other group saying, Hey, we will be doing payroll by the time it
gets around to really handling that.
So please make those moves.
It's just me reading between the lines.
Other reading between the lines that we can do is about Nick.
He is in uncharted waters.
We've got some quotes coming out after his outing with the rehab
stint in single a Lake Elsinore.
For those of you that were not here for that episode or did not see, he
threw to a couple of batters, no issues.
And then on the third batter, he middle of the at bat through a pitch and on
the follow through, just walked off in clear discomfort later that day, went
and threw another bullpen and is now coming out saying, I think for me, it's
just day to day played catch today, which felt good.
I'll play catch tomorrow and it'll feel good.
And we'll just kind of go from there and go with how I feel each day.
I'm not going to put a timetable on anything.
I'm going to say, I'm going to go throw a bullpen X, Y, or Z.
So yeah, sure.
Let's read between the lines here and try and do our due diligence
and sleuthing around if you want.
But I think we can also, from my opinion, I would say that this pretty
much puts us solidly at we're not going to see Pavetta again.
I don't think that it's necessarily even shenanigans.
Like I had talked about how there was the contract clause of him being
back by late August, needing to lead, like it will lead to either the rest
of his option getting voided or not, which is a $23 million difference in earnings.
I just, I get that.
I'm like, we'll talk about Musgrove in a second.
And I've already been kind of low key, potentially wrong on Musgrove.
So I'm not perfect at prognosticating these things, but I don't see how you
go from an elbow issue in the middle of a rehab start at single A to saying
that your day-to-day to then all of a sudden in there's 15 days left between
now and him needing to be back in the majors to, in order to qualify for all
of that money, I don't see how in two weeks and one day Nick Pavetta goes
from, Hey, I might play catch tomorrow and still feel good to, okay, I'm good
to take the spot of the numbers three through five starter and I'll go out
there and throw up.
I just don't see it happening.
If you see it happening, I look super duper forward to be proven wrong.
As always, this show is really good at proving me wrong.
But on this one, I I'm afraid I just don't see it.
He talked further about it, went through my evaluation.
Nothing really sparked anything for me that kind of created the same thing.
So we just decided to go throw some balls into the wall and see how it turned out.
Was able to throw about 10 to 15 good fastballs at a good clip.
Best I could do with no cleats on and threw a couple of curve balls, one
sweeper, and wasn't able to recreate any sensation or any feeling.
The equivalent of walking into the doctor's office and being like, Hey,
look doc, the couple of times I moved my arm, like it didn't really, I just,
these all feel like we're watching Pavetta grasp at straws to, uh, to try
and find some way to get back.
And I, like, I dig it.
I wish we had a way to get him involved.
Like if it was just the thing, if it was the difference between like, Oh, he
just can't throw a ton of innings.
Then I'd be like, great, cool.
Let's figure it out.
But I just don't see it on the flip side.
Let's go positive.
We got a David Morgan update.
His fourth rehab appearance in triple a, a pair of strikeouts, two hits, his left
knee inflammation and tightness seems to be behind him dot, dot, dot question mark.
So I put, this is the good news.
I'm sure some of you are like, whoop-dee-doo Basil.
David Morgan doesn't solve our, um, doesn't solve our hitting.
No, David Morgan doesn't solve our hitting, but bringing David Morgan back.
I consider David Morgan to be a tier two bullpen arm.
Tier one being Maury Hone and Miller.
David Morgan to me is right behind that.
He might not be the best, but I would definitely say in our pitching by chaos.
Slash attempting to have Robbie Ray and is fixed.
Like it would just, we need everybody that we can get, even if it's at two innings here,
two thirds of an Indians there.
Great.
We still, I, every arm that has any sort of major league competency that we can get back
between now and the end of the year and tastica final story to talk about today.
I would have done this video in a couple of hours, but then the overlapping with the game
and the YouTube metrics don't seem to enjoy us posting during the game.
So I'll talk about it in advance, but Joe Musgrove is going to make a triple a rehab
start today.
So moving from single a to triple a is fingers crossed a major step.
I would say that this is, is like, this is one where I just, I don't, I don't want to
get too confident and be like, all right, well, he did the Lake Elsinore one for two
and two thirds.
And then he did the triple a one for two and two thirds, like said for a long time.
I don't think we're ever going to see Joe Musgrove again, given that it's been two years
almost since he had this actual injury little under two years since the surgery.
If we're doing this dance, I would assume that this is not the last rehab start, but
that if he can be healthy after two rehab outings would seem to me then that it's like,
okay, it's time to make a decision about us bringing him back.
I would question though, given the decisions to trade for Ray and Mize, if Joe Musgrove
is really at this point in the what's left of the season, who's in the rotation and how
long Musgrove has had to work up into building up some stamina.
Is Joe Musgrove really a starter at this point?
Not meant like in a disrespect sense, but is Joe Musgrove just Joe Musgrove, a two inning
guy, a three, like three good innings of Joe Musgrove once through the lineup and then
yank him or have Wandi go out there and throw an Indian and then Musgrove for three and
then finish it with the bullpen.
I'm same argument with David Morgan.
I'm down for any and all major league competent arms, but I just don't see the timetable even
if today goes healthy to really ratchet Musgrove up into being a starter.
So that's where I'm at.
Those are the stories I've got today.
