AI GeneratedThe Hurricanes suffered a frustrating shootout loss to the Edmonton Oilers despite scoring five goals and welcoming back Seth Jarvis. While Jarvis's return provided an immediate offensive spark, the game highlighted ongoing concerns regarding goaltending consistency and defensive lapses against elite opponents.
There are questions now inside the Hurricanes roster.
What happened last night?
Jarvis had a big return.
Everybody was set to go.
Yes, they played a tough team, but where does the issue lie?
We might know the answer to that.
Last night was a tough loss for the Hurricanes.
No doubt they'll bounce back,
but there seems to be a common denominator when they face
adversity. Welcome to Hurricanes Digest, I'm Jeff
Testinero, I invite you all to like, share, comment
and subscribe. Um, click the notification button too, uh we
are over 2500, the push to 2600. Yeah, I'm
greedy, uh starts now. I appreciate all of you, I thank all of you
also if you're a fan of the
Hornets, Hornets Digest as well, I'm over there too, head over there too
um, you'll be glad you did. It's
a lot of fun. I thank all of you for everything that you do for me
and for this. Um, it was tough
last night. It was good seeing Jarvis back, um it
was exciting, his goal was absolutely sick
it was a Seth Jarvis move, uh first goal
of the season in his first game of the season
Carolina scored five in Edmonton
but they still only came away with one point
they came out with a shootout loss
which brings me back to the crease. All right, the defense is
always tough. Yeah, they played Edmonton, yeah you
got Connor McDavid, arguably one of the greatest
players in the entire world. You got Leon Draisaitl
who I like better than McDavid, but that's me
um, you got Nugent Hopkins, you have
a dynamic Edmonton Oilers team, tied relatively uh record
wise with the Hurricanes could
be I know it's early it's only late October uh could be the
potential Stanley Cup matchup for the Hurricanes
if the two clash together but the loss is a loss
and my question is now lying in the goaltender crease where do Kozachov
and Bussy stand Bussy
has having some issues
as the starting goalie yeah they played Edmonton like I just said but
five goals and a shootout loss that's a lot
of goals I dozed off I fell asleep I admit it I fell
asleep it was late I'm on the East Coast um it
was four two Hurricanes I woke up and we lost
in a shootout we scored another one
but they got what what three goals in a period and a half
what does Bussy need to improve my brain's over on Bussy my brain's
also over on our socials on
X at Canes Digest click follow
for more over there got some more stuff over there I'm just
kind of clicking away just a multimedia machine
at Canes Digest over on X all right the Hurricanes
lost six five in the shootout after leading four two
and later five four so they really kind of
they had they were down one goal in the first
and came back and played Carolina hockey Connor
McDavid Leon Draisaitl each had five points last night
um yeah Carolina generated enough offense
to win but Edmonton kept finding a uh response
and I'm wondering oh you know where does that
lie Bussy uh finished with 16 saves
on 21 shots five goals allowed is a difficult night for any
goaltender i don't care who you're playing against
but we need to look at how those goals
happened before deciding how much of this loss belongs
to him there always seems to be a little
quirky thing going on though
so my head is scratching at this moment one clear positive
Jarvis on the ice scoring
in his season debut like i said earlier some six stop motion goal
he looked like if you're a football fan
an old football fan like i am remember Barry Sanders
for the Detroit Lions wow stop go like he would stop
on a dime uh that's what jarvis's uh goal
looked like last night you know waiting
to get him back carolina immediately got an offensive
contribution for him uh it was great to see
this is encouraging for a lineup that has been dealing
with injuries jarvis gave the canes another threat
and his return deserves attention even though
the finish kind of took away the luster
on that one the Hurricanes still banked a point
um that matters but there's frustration
and leaving another one on the table and handing
it to edmonton um especially after all
the great performances we've seen it's just it's it's tough
because now the trip flies they fly all the way down
the United States into St Louis um it's going
to be a tough game my preference would be Peota
for the next start in st louis um based on the
pattern of performances that we've seen from Brandon Bussy sorry Bus
but it is what it is
You know, the difference is two game logs.
Piotr has given Carolina the more consistent set of starts so far.
Bussy, not so much.
It's been really kind of tough.
His 6-0, Piotr's 6-0 with a .89 save percentage.
The little card above
my head marks five quality starts in six appearances.
he has not been flawless he stopped 14 of 17 in Vancouver
and the Canes scored six six to support
him Bussy is two
and two with three quality starts in six appearances they've been good
performances they've been concerning goals
the concern is how often Carolina gets a dependable
game out of him because it's hit
or miss man uh that's why i would go with Piotr in st louis
uh the stronger he's got the stronger claim
to the next important start uh he has earned that
opportunity through his results Bussy can change
the conversation by putting together good
appearances uh he i'm assuming he would start
the game after st louis i apologize i didn't really
do my research for who's after st louis
but i'm sure i had a little something jumping up on there
um wins the wins need context the wins absolutely
positively need context opponent quality matters
defensive support matters um our goal support matters
but over repeated appearances Carolina
needs a goalie who keeps the game manageable don't forget we
are missing Stahl, Hall and Jenko
yeah we got Jarvie back so that's a positive
but you know he's he's gotta he's gotta put it
together Bussy's gotta put it together Pieter has made
a better case for the starting job just by
putting it together for Bussy the issue
is sustaining his performance throughout games
and across starts one highlights highlight save cannot answer all
those questions his save
percentage is 0.865 865 um you know
seven goals against um those need
to improve it just needs he
needs to get better he needs
to get better Edmonton scored three power play goals the late equalizer
did deflect off KK's skate before we get the pitchforks
and torches out and go after KK
whatever went off his skate
and then Bussy stopped he did stop McDavid and Drysidle
in the shootout before Nugent-Hopkins did score
um they do make a blanket verdict on his night
you know can't throw everything at him
but well five goals is tough he has already shown he can
deliver under enormous pressure including
Carolina's championship run the challenge now
is producing reliable goaltending
on a regular night we got we're 12 games into the 84 game
schedule this isn't a three
and done man his previous success earns consideration his current
performance still needs a lot of evaluating i'll
be watching four things tracking through traffic
arriving uh set after lateral movement dictating rebounds away
from danger and recovering for the
second attempt those are questions that need answering
those need things to be to be looked at
you know you know with his mechanic i don't know maybe there's
a mechanical flaw in there maybe
he's just having a stanley cup hangover i don't know
that also leads us to the Hellebuyck question
i'm sorry i'm bringing up Connor Hellebuyck
again Elliot Friedman reported that Carolina
did make an offer for Hellebuyck
that no longer includes Alexander Nikishin that tells us the
hurricanes remain remain involved it does
not identify Bussi as part of the offer but we were
talking Pyotr maybe now Bussi's the guy they're trying
to ship off after Pyotr's hot stop start
Bussi carries a 1.9 million dollar cap hit through 2029
if winnipeg values him that manageable
contract could make him a goalie component
in a larger package you know could he be included
probably you know that's my speculation everybody knows
that um winnipeg wants a goalie in exchange
for their goalie who wouldn't you know they have
do they have Stuart Skinner or something there
um you know at first we were talking Pyotr
Kochekov um as a trade option maybe now it's
actually Brandon Bussy who Tulsky's like no just take this guy
because Peter's playing good i don't
know that'd be my guess uh
my uh position give Peter most starts ask for Bussy for greater
consistency um i again am not a fan of trading
for Connor Hellebuyck but i don't know um you do
something you gotta do something uh Peter
is playing great as a starter but you gotta look
somewhere what do you think what would you
do lean on Peter more stay patient with Bussy and
keep swapping them in and out
or pursue Connor Hellebuyck i don't know choice is yours up to you
Caniacs. Tough pill
to swallow. They were playing
great. Oh yeah, it was Edmonton.
Edmonton's great, but you've got to beat these
teams. These are teams. We are
the defending Stanley Cup
champions. Probably
the odds on favorite to get
to the finals again for the East
and Edmonton's hot.
You've got to stop Edmonton. You've got to play well
against Edmonton, Colorado.
The big teams
coming at you.
and Bussy Bussy's tripping up he lost again calgary
was hot got a loss in calgary um
flew into edmonton let in what three goals
in a period and a half uh the the penalties
the penalties didn't help the canes last night
so that is also tough to evaluate they just couldn't
stay out of the box so if anything else comes down i'll
be the first to let you know St. Louis
is tomorrow night um so let's see what happens against
the Blues anything else comes down i'll
be the first to let you know don't forget to hit
that subscribe button for Hurricane's Digest
i'm Jeff Testinero let's go Canes
