This is so Dumb...
Oct 24, 2026
This has me so confused.
I want to crash out kind of because of this,
but I don't entirely know just what the heck is going on
with this headline that I had to read a couple of times
just to make sure I was absorbing it correctly.
But on this episode of Padre's Digest,
I guess we've got to tell Cameron Maybin to go bleep himself,
and it's going to make sense in a second.
It's happening, everybody.
Christian Patterson back with another episode of the show
that's bringing you daily content.
and I was always like subscribe comment share I
on this one I gotta defend Craig Stammen and I
already wanted to do that I enjoyed the year
that Craig Stammen gave us but then I I saw this
headline of the Padres have had enough trauma fans weighing
in on controversial Cameron Maybin
statement and I just it would like give
or had that kind of thing where you're rubbing your eyes
checking to make sure you read it right you're
like maybe it's too early in the morning and I'm
just not absorbing this and then you go
into it you're like no i'm reading this correctly it's
just a you're just like this is just
so dumb that my brain hurts so Cameron Maybin weighed in um
talking about how he thinks Aaron Boone should take over
as the San Diego Padres manager and
that confused me on so many levels let me read you
the direct quote from him saying having played
for Boone i can tell you what fans don't always see he's
an elite communicator holds guys accountable
behind closed doors without embarrassing them
publicly makes players believe in themselves
even when nobody else does Boone is a tremendous leader of men
and I truly believe Padres players
and fans would love and appreciate what he brings
to the clubhouse first off uh the like the levels
of confusion go for days and days
and days the first major thing to me is that Craig Stammen
is under contract for two more years I get
that it's not like you know manager contracts are
get a roundable and you can fire anybody at any time yada yada
but Craig Stammen just came off of
taking the Padres back to the playoffs
and i get that this wasn't like we didn't win the world
series we were technically under 500 on the road
and i'm sure that all of you i'm not going to say
all of you i'm sure that it's a split camp
if i just asked the question out loud did were you
happy with the job that Craig Stammen did
but in addition Aaron Boone under contract for another
year with the Yankees so both guys are under contract
but Cameron Maben's like let's fire
both of them and move Boone across the country
to go be the Padres skipper and so I'm like
infinitely confused on that one
and I'm like I don't like I enjoy Cameron Maben here as Padre
and so I don't really want to like have him be excommunicado
and be like no get the hell out
here that's a dumb idea and i want to entertain
the opportunities of like let's have any and all
rational conversations surrounding what hypothetically makes
the padres the best but
i kind of guess that this had me wind up
at the spot where i'm like now that i've had a couple
of weeks of off season and i'm not fretting over
the immediate hindsight of like oh yesterday was
a bad job with the pitching management
or why did Austin Hayes play or like any of the knee
jerky in-season reactionary stuff that you have sometimes
and it just kind of is all sort of in
the rear view mirror getting further away blending
into one holistic collective image of like what
the 2026 season was can i give Craig Stammen
a b plus like is that drop in the comment section
what grade you would give Craig Stammen and let me know
or like do we need to grade this on the
curve at all of it was his first year give him
a little leeway i'm like in the initial reactions
like i said all of those minutiae in the moment kind of things
but also the we could have had
Albert Pujols and Craig Stammen wasn't even really
on the list of guys that we were interviewing
and so like whoa what's going on but then
the further down the line i think we had a couple
of key moments of stuff like this if you guys remember
this they got caught for a half second
on the tv broadcast at the end of a game
of Craig Stammen chirping back at fans who were
getting after Manny Machado after
a bad extra innings loss early in the season when things
really were like not clicking
and way out of sorts as far as like Cameron Maybin's argument of
the behind-the-scenes communicator
and all that kind of stuff this seemed like that of Stammen was
standing up for his boys and sticking with his guns
and doing the middle reliever you know uber
good team management ubiquitous in all directions make everybody big
and small on the team feel
equally important kind of stuff and have the guy's backs
and his press conferences in retrospect
he seemed to me i called him captain milk toast
at one point early in the season of being like
okay Stammen's just so like even keel
and it's just like i want a little more fire but then i think
in the grander scheme of things i realized that he
his being super vaguely positive even keel
kind of awkwardly smiley i actually really liked
in retrospect of him being somebody that the
Padres did way way down and then ended
the season as the hottest team in
baseball and he didn't really act all
that much differently from one point to
like from the highs to the lows there
wasn't a huge difference in who Craig
Stammen seemed to be at least outwardly
facing for the fans and us all to
consume and I dig that do I think that
there are issues of leaving some
pitchers in too long and the inability
to stick with his gut on certain players
and change the line like sure yeah great that comes
with all of the learning curves i think that you could
also put that indictment on Stephen Souza
and Ruben Niebla and the whole totality of Stam
and hiring a really young coaching staff to come
in and kind of reinvigorate
and you know inject some life into all this but for me the hitting
started to happen now if we get again to next season
and it's we find ourselves in a circular
pattern of wow out the gate we're just absolutely trash
and banking on it clicking 39 games in and
Stam being like oh no but that'll be honest
then we will catch fire in August okay then i
think maybe we can have a bigger picture of maybe
this guy uh is not really right for this job
because he obviously every season starts out absolutely horribly
and then you know requires
red hot fire liquid magma to catch us up in get us into the playoffs
but in totality i kind of feel
like pressure was so great not just going
into this season of him being a young rookie manager
with a young coaching staff and a lot of win now expectations
and being in the same division as the
Dodgers but also then to be in a position where we
were like 15 back hovering on heading into last
place in the division and Manny hadn't hit a home run
and everyone was stammering for like at the
very least we got to fire Stephen Souza Jr
and pitchers were getting injured and all like pet
heads were falling off um and whatnot he didn't crack he didn't
um publicly privately crack he
didn't let the team fall apart
and so yeah a little learning on the on the job type of indictments
but i think that kind of this scene this take
from Cameron Maben has me galvanized now to be like
shut the hell up he's our manager kind of vibes
so i'm really curious what you guys think like
i said now that it's less nitty-gritty of the little stuff
and more looking big picture and
everything how you thought Craig Stammet did let me know
