Romanian President Nicusor Dan announced that, a Romanian F-16 fighter jet destroyed a drone that entered the country's airspace. According to him, the incident occurred in an uninhabited area, so the pilot was able to open fire without risking civilians. Experts are currently investigating the drone crash site and determining all the circumstances of the incident. Most likely, this is a Russian drone. A Russian Armed Forces UAV could have flown into NATO territory during a massive attack on the Odessa region. Romania, which borders Ukraine's Odessa region, has previously recorded instances of Russian drones flying into its territory during Russian attacks on Ukrainian targets. Romanian air defenses had previously failed to intercept the targets .
The incident carries direct implications for the U.S. and its NATO allies, as repeated airspace breaches along the alliance’s eastern flank have fueled concerns that Russia’s war in Ukraine could spill across NATO borders. Romania, which borders Ukraine, has reported dozens of drone incursions or debris incidents since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in 2022.
Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu said the interception took place over an unpopulated area in Buzău County. "Our borders and our sovereignty are non-negotiable, and our military and NATO air police will continue to monitor the land border, the Danube and the Black Sea, as our military frequently identifies risks," Țoiu told Fox News Digital.
"The impact area and the drone debris are currently being analyzed, but the pattern is consistent with prior confirmed Russian drone flights during the numerous illegal attacks against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure on Romania’s border," she added. Țoiu said Romania and NATO would continue to defend allied territory.
"NATO works, and we plan to be even stronger with the decisions on air defense and budget allocation from The Hague and Ankara summits," she said. "The path toward increased security is the path toward peace at Romania’s border. We will defend our citizens and we will continue to invest in protecting Romanian and Allied territory."
Two Italian Eurofighter Typhoon jets, deployed to Romania under NATO’s air policing mission, were joined by two Romanian F-16s. One F-16 engaged the target with an air-to-air missile, downing it over unpopulated ground near the village of Padina. No casualties or injuries were reported.
Romania, an EU and NATO member sharing a border with Ukraine, has recorded dozens of drone incursions since the war began. This incident marked the first successful interception. Russian attack UAVs have repeatedly violated Romanian airspace. For example, on the night of May 29, 2026, a Russian UAV flew into Romanian airspace and crashed into the roof of an apartment building in Galati. The 10th-floor apartment caught fire and two people were injured. Russia claimed the drone entered Romanian airspace after going off course. NATO and European Union officials condemned the incident. The European Commission said it showed Russia’s war had “crossed yet another line”.
