And good morning and thank you for joining us here on this Monday, July
27th. I'm Adam Gerke and I'm Maria Garcia. We are continuing our coverage
of last night's shooting at Seattle Center during bite of Seattle. It's a
food festival that is very popular and we know that three people are dead.
Four others are hurt, including a two year old boy. We head out now to our
reporters on the scene. We have Fox 13 Sean Chitnis, who is at Harborview
Medical Center now working to get updates on those victims. But first we
turn to Taylor Winkle, who joins us live now from Seattle Center with a
breakdown of what we know this morning, Taylor. Yeah, you guys. So this is a
food festival. It's supposed to be centered around family fun and people
were killed out here last night. Others were caught in the crossfire. I do want
to point out to this morning that there's still even vendor tents set up
behind us here from the festival. We're live here near the Seattle Center,
waiting on the latest from Seattle police this morning. This is what it
looked like during the most recent media briefing from city officials last
night. They confirmed one suspected shooter is in custody. One is believed
to still be on the run this morning. This is video from the scene is
stampedes of people rushed from the danger. Police think two people were
shooting at each other. The assistant chief of Seattle Police says that 601
last night people heard gunshots. They started calling 911. Officers were
already in the area. They responded. They say right when they got here, they
addressed one of the shooters. That person gave up. That is the person who
is in custody. So far this morning, we haven't seen that person booked on the
jail roster, but we are monitoring that. All we can tell you is they were
described as a young person. The other person believed to be involved, ran off
and at last check, police were still actively searching for that person.
They addressed seven victims here on scene. Two people died at the scene.
Four were taken by Seattle Fire to Harborview and then another victim
later showed up themselves to UW Medical Center. We're going to have
more on those victims conditions here in a bit. In the meantime, I can tell
you two guns were also recovered from the scene. But right now, with no
surveillance cameras in the immediate area, police need witnesses. They say to
forward and be brave. This one other person that we're looking at so far,
there may be more. We're still trying to figure this out. There's we have a
limited amount of witnesses. So one of the things that really could help us
out is that people would call and they want them to call that violent crime
hotline. The number is 206233 5000 206233 5000. Right now, police don't
believe there is an ongoing threat to the community. You know, back out here
on the scene, you can imagine those people running from the danger. I also
want to point out to you behind us this little shoe, which may have flown off a
toddler as their mom was trying to take them away from that gunfire again. This
is a family event. It is very popular. If you grew up in the area, you've
probably been to it before. This is all developing. We are in the early stages
of that investigation this morning, so we're assuming some of this information
will even change as the day goes on. In the meantime, back to those victims.
Sean Fitness, you are live for us from Harborview this morning, working to get
updates on those conditions. What can you tell us about the victims so far?
Well, Taylor, as you were explaining, some of them did come directly here to
Harborview Medical Center, and we've been here now for about an hour. It
seems like it's been fairly calm outside of the hospital. But we do know
that last night after the shooting, and as those victims were arriving here,
they did put the hospital on a partial lockdown. I have been looking around and
noticed that there is what seems to be a slightly larger presence of police
here coming in and out or around the hospital. So here are the details that
we were given by staff at Harborview on the conditions of those that were here.
We're told one woman went to the operating room and is in critical
condition. The other three patients here are in satisfactory condition. That
includes the two year old boy who was shot at Seattle Center. The remaining
two patients are a 23 year old man and a 39 year old woman. Late last night,
we heard from city and state leaders about that initial response to treat
people who were shot there at Seattle Center. We discovered as we got to the
scene that there were a total seven victims that suffered gunshot wounds at
the scene. Officers immediately began to perform CPR and first aid on several
victims. All of us are hard to out to everybody who's impacted by this. I
can't imagine being the parent of a two year old toddler, for example, was
injured in a shooting like this. So multiple victims, as we explained, were
transferred here from the scene directly by the Seattle Fire Department.
According to Harborview staff, the patients all range in their injuries
from shots to their arm, stomach and different areas of the leg. We're going
to check in again with the hospital. We've already made that request to see
if we can get any more updates and details this morning on how those
patients are doing. But one more time. The last update that we have here from
staff is that one is in critical. Three are in satisfactory condition. Live at
Harborview Medical Center, Sean Chitniss, Fox 13 News. 200 K. I'll get
that plaque that says 100 K shooting shooting. Oh, oh, here. Yeah, this video
captures those moments just a shots were fired. People who were standing
by nearby say at first it was hard to really figure out what was going on.
There were like a bunch of pops and like it was a bunch of pasta almost
like fireworks and then like a couple of single ones. And then suddenly like
there were birds that flew and then like everybody starts like a wave.
Yeah, like it was like a wave of people started flying out. And then I hear
everybody just running. Everybody's grieving chaos after that. I almost
got pushed. He's pushing me. Yeah, it was a lot going on. And as you just
heard, police believe that there were two people shooting at each other. One
confirmed suspect was arrested immediately after the shooting. While
the other took off, officers say they found two guns but haven't released a
description of the suspect who ran off. If you have any information, you're
asked to reach out right away.
Last night, Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson releasing a statement calling the
shooting an act of horrific violence, going on to say that in the days ahead,
officials will work to figure out what happened and be transparent about what
they learned. Governor Ferguson also releasing a statement saying his
prayers are with the families of the victims and the responders as they work
to keep people safe. We do have much more coverage coming up as we continue
with good day Seattle.
