Instant Analysis of Day 1 of 49ers Training Camp
Jul 26, 2026
Day one of training camp just wrapped up and the good news is that Kyle Shanahan was out there.
He was not out there for about the first half an hour but when the cameras went away he walked out
very slowly and watched most of practice while standing next to John Lynch. He had a big bandage
on his right hand and again he walked slowly. At one point Kyle used check and Fred Warner
walked up to him in the middle of the field and gave him a hug. He seemed like he was okay.
I mean I don't know how his head feels but he seemed like he was okay and then with about
20 minutes left in practice he walked off. So he was out there for about 45 minutes.
That's really good news. He's the head coach and the more he's out there the better but I thought
what's really interesting is he wasn't participating and you wouldn't have known it. This is a well-oiled
machine that he's put together and there's a lot of good assistant coaches that know what they're
doing and a lot of veterans who've done this before. So the offense looked great even without
Kyle Shanahan. Brock Purdy was terrific. He threw one pass that got dropped by Malek Mustafa but
he really was locked in. He got the ball to everyone. He spread it around.
Mike Evans, Ricky Pearsall, Kyle Juszczyk, Tonjes, McCaffrey. It didn't look like the first day of
training camp. It looked like a team that's been together a long time and remember Bill Walsh,
the greatest coach of all time, left after 10 years and the next year the Niners were even
better without him. I'm not saying the Niners will be better without Kyle Shanahan but this
is the opportunity for so many people to step up and show what they can do independent of him
and his shadow. So I think it was a great opportunity. It was a great day of practice.
Stay tuned for the good and not so good. I'll get deep into who else looked good and not so good.
