The team faces critical roster battles across the running back, wide receiver, and cornerback positions, while integrating new defensive personnel and navigating uncertainty at the place-kicker position under a demanding practice schedule.
I hope you guys are ready for some football folks. The Giants rookies have reported and that can only
mean one thing. We are six days away from the first training camp practice at the Greenbrier
Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. So in today's Blue Rush we're going to go over
the top starting and roster battles that we're going to see at camp. Paul Schwartz,
our Giants beat writer for the post, has his sunscreen, his notepad, his recorder,
and his hat all ready for camp and he joins us now. So we're going to talk about the training
camp battles that are heating up and we're going to start with the starting battles. We're going
to start with the starters because right now at RB1 there's Tyrone Tracy Jr. and there's Cam
Scadaboo. It's going to be a two-back system so in my eyes they're both starters pretty much,
Paul, but when you're in that hotel room the night before a game or not the hotel room like
the meeting room area and you go through that walkthrough and some of the guys are in socks,
some guys are eating sunflower seeds, and they say one's out. That starter will be who? Tyrone
Tracy or Cam Scadaboo because I feel like Matt Nagy, I feel like it's going to be Tracy because
he can give Matt Nagy a little bit more versatility out of that backfield but Cam
Scadaboo has looked good not only last year but in OTAs. Who do you think comes out of this one
victorious? I mean I think it'll be Cam but I think it'll be Scadaboo assuming he's healthy
which you know I think he'll be pretty much raring to go for the start of training camp now.
Are they going to put him in every single drill? No, he's coming off a dislocated ankle but I think
he will not be on pup. I think he'll be ready to roll. Look of all the of all the battles we're
going to talk about this is probably and you mentioned it it's going to be a two-back system.
This is like the least important. Now I know as a player you're like yes RB1 you get you know when
when they and if they announce the offensive or home game you run out on the field it's important
it's important to start. It's really more important at the end of the day at the end of the game.
What does the carries look like? What are the rushing attempts look like? What does the snap
count look like? I mean I think I mean I think Tyrone Tracy is sort of being undervalued in some
degrees here. You know Cam Scadaboo was the rage last year. Tyrone was excellent as a rookie two
years ago not as good last year just didn't get off to the same start and then Cam Scadaboo came
in and kind of supplanted him not kind of supplanted him as the starter but if you look at
the numbers I mean Cam Scadaboo was at 4.1 yards per carry Tyrone Tracy was at 4.2 not you know
significantly and not a significant difference. I think you know Tracy is bigger they both offer
value as a receiver maybe Cam Scadaboo a little more so I think who starts week one is not so
relevant it's important to the player they'll both play I'm very anxious to see both of them in
training camp to see how they look especially Cam coming off that major injury. Yeah I think they're
going to go with the hot hand I feel like there's going to be a chance where or there are going to
be times where the guy who is the starter may not get as many carries or yards or have as much
production as the guy who's coming off of the bench so they've got a the ability to have that
two-back system which John Harbaugh loves which Matt Nagy has seen in prior you know with the
Kansas City Chiefs it's all about how you use them and which mismatches you can get with both of them
on the field or with what them two guys just come just rotating that one thing I loved about Brandon
Jacobs and Ahmad Brasha they used to talk about how Jacobs would be like he didn't care he didn't
care what down it was what play call it was or anything if he was tired he would just tap his
head and those two guys would just switch out you hope to see it uh this year because this is going
to be the room that carries this offense for the foreseeable future until the offense really finds
their identity and that goes and takes us into the next battle and I know when we were texting
back and forth we were kind of saying like okay wide receiver two but until Malik neighbors gets
back it's wide receiver one slash two Darius Slayton, Darnell Mooney, Milakai Fields I feel
like week one the starters is going to be Mooney and Fields and that's nothing against Darius
Slayton he'd come off the bench be that third wide receiver I just think we're going to see
something different this year when it comes to the Giants passing game because this is Harbaugh's
Giants who do you feel is going to be that that one and two to start week one first of all you
didn't mention Calvin Austin did you you did not mention him I think I um first of all look
you're a receiver you you value young receivers um I don't think Malakai Fields is going to start now
I could be wrong he could be great in training camp but um you know I don't think he was
unbelievably awesome in the spring that's not a knock it just I don't think he was um rookies
you know Monty Toomer was the most prepared receiver I've ever seen and he was as you know
close to a zero as a rookie you know it takes time for these guys so I think that's putting a lot on
Malakai Fields plate to say that a guy they drafted up into the third round to get is going
to start um now we have to see is Darius Slayton all the way back from sports hernia surgery
we'll see the Giants say he will be maybe they'll take it a little slowly with him you know no need
to go crazy next week in the first so second practices with a guy like Darius Slayton and
one thing you know Darius Slayton has a lot of skins on the wall with the Giants right but none
with Harbaugh and this offensive coaching staff so um he kind of has to be back on the team
because of salary cap implications um you know this is the after after this year I think you
can part ways with him if it's not working out and the money works that this year it really didn't
work if if the um you know if the new Giants coaching staff just said we'd like to move on
from him you really can't do that so Darius Slayton it's a proven year for him he's coming
off a poor year one of his poorest years since he's been with the Giants and now he's come back
from an injury um I would say um you know Malik neighbors will not be certainly will not be ready
for the starter training camp so I think Darnell Moody is certainly next in line there um I would
put Calvin Austin, Calvin Austin looked really good in in the preseason and um I think he is
ahead of the rookie I really do. Bob just so so you have so who's your top three like coming out
of training camp who's that top three that's gonna line up against the Cowboys and I mean
you can say depending on if it's 11 personnel those three receivers are your starters so you
have you said Mooney, Slayton and Calvin Austin in the slot if we're not if it's not going to be
neighbors right I mean obviously neighbors if he's healthy but let's move him to the side because we
agree he might not be ready yeah I think Mooney I think Austin and I would say Slayton based on his
veteran you know experience and things like that I just think it's a lot for a rookie to break into
the starting lineup week one. The only reason I say Malachi Fields is because I don't think they
go as much at 11 personnel as a Brian uh Dable went when it comes to it so if you're going to
have this whole run the ball system type first Malachi Fields can kind of be that Z receiver
that you can move around and I'm not necessarily saying start the man because he can block but he
gives you something out there on the edge and then if he's making these big boy 50-50 type catch
you know to these catches throughout the course of training camp I think that's something to where
they look at it like hmm maybe not you know maybe not week one prime time game they're asking a lot
out of him to step in and and really have a high level of production against the Dallas Cowboys
but I see a little plaques mixed with a money tumor in this kid and I'm anxious to see like
when the pads come on how physical he gets and how he goes after these contested these contested
passes now some of the corners that he's going to be going up against throughout the course
of this training camp and again it's another thing we were texting back and forth we were saying cb2
but I have to put cb1 slash cb2 on this one I see you shaking your head a little bit we've got
Greg Newsome the third Colton Hood where are you going to go with this one who comes out or which
two comes out as the starters in training camp well I see Paul Sanadibo as as cornerback one
and a starter you know I don't see his if there's any kind of you know fight for his job he's not
coming off a great year but uh based on the money based on his experience based on his track record
I think he's a starter so I mean is he is established as most cornerback you know for you
know starting cornerbacks in the league maybe not so much but he was a big ticket free agent a year
ago so I think Paul Sanadibo is your cornerback one now two I mean I would think Greg Newsome
has the upper hand you know they signed him to a one-year deal eight million dollars it's a
made good deal he's a former first round pick of the browns he has a pedigree in the NFL he's hungry
he wants to prove it to the Giants or any other team so you know one year deal for a guy who's
only he's only 26 years old yeah he's really young yeah so um um you know I would think he's no he he
is number two at this point and you know and those two guys I would pencil in as starters certainly
going into camp now they love Colton Hood he's a rookie um if Colton Hood challenges for a starting
job that means either you know Greg Newsome doesn't look great or Colton Hood looks exceptionally
great and that's fine you know let them the more the merrier let them battle for it but I would say
among those three and now you have Drew Phillips as a nickel corner but um you know can Newsome
play a little nickel corner perhaps Hood says he can play a little a little nickel corner so
you know I I think it's Adibo I think it's um certainly I think it's Hood will get playing
time and I think that Newsome will get playing time as well so um you know I I think that's
that's the way it will go with that group and you're kind of hoping Greg Newsome kind of plays
above his pay grade to where you don't have to start Colton Hood remember let's go back to 2007
Aaron Ross wasn't a starter that year after being drafted in the first round I don't think he he
didn't really start playing remember he had that pick six I believe it was against San Francisco
49ers it was a home game but he was kind of coming in throughout as a rotational piece because
Corey Webster was the guy that you could say that they drafted him to kind of take his job I know
Sam Madison was a little bit up there in age but Sam Madison was still playing some really good
football at that time and then Kevin Dockery kind of had emerged as that guy that that Spagnola
loved being in the slot playing as that nickel so Aaron Ross really didn't get the snaps and reps
that we thought he was going to get getting drafted in that first round uh by the by that
regime and that Steve Spagnola long right yeah it's a long season yes a long season you remember
in 2007 Steve Smith was nothing yeah he was he he was an afterthought he was not on the field
broke his collarbone on the field yep he was he was a zero as a rookie and he looked like he was
going to be a zero rookie year and then he starts playing a little bit down the stretch and in the
playoffs they don't win the Super Bowl without him so um you know if Colton Hood doesn't doesn't
have you know 40 snaps week one I'm not going to worry you know um and we've seen at times where
they kind of push the high draft picks onto the field at cornerback and it's a little too much
too soon so um you know is this a great position position of strength right now I don't think so
because we both have some questions about number one about Paulson Adibo so um they need a um
you know it would be nice if of that group of Hood of Adibo of Drew Phillips and of Newsome that
three of those four emergence guys you can trust on the field yeah I'm with you you got to go with
the experience especially in week one against the Dallas Cowboys where George Pickens, CeeDee Lamb
and then you go on the road to the Rams you got Puka Nakua and Devante Adams so you you have to
kind of go you kind of hoping that Adibo and Greg Newsome with the experience can line up and be
your starters in uh in two primetime games against two deadly duos of wide receivers but now that
brings us to the roster guys and there's some familiar names on here that we've talked about
for quite some time but now what do they say you got to put the pedal to the rub to the rubble or
or the the pedal uh the something to the rub either way you got to step up and make a and
get yourself to the metal pedal pedal to the metal pedal to the metal and then there's what
rubber to the road is what I was thinking as well where the rubber beats the road okay and here's a
guy that really has got to put the rubber on the road right here and that's Evan Neal I don't know
if you want me to ask you percentage or chances he makes it but I'll ask you yes no and why does
Evan Neal come out of this training camp as on the 53 mayor roster with the New York football
giants right that's the correct question it's not is he going to start is he going you know in the
past with Evan Neal was is he going to start is he going to you know now it's survival right they
re-sign him for a one-year deal for the veteran minimum um you know and and and he's he's imminently
cuttable right if they don't want to you know I figured when when the new regime came in with
John Harbaugh they would just say Evan Neal's a failed draft pick um we'll move on let him go sign
somewhere else but they said no you know Harbaugh said we like them coming out in Baltimore we like
them coming out in 2022 um the coaches want to work with them let's sign them and and you know
you got to bring how many of them you bring 15 16 of them to training camp so you bring them in and
you see what happens so what's his competition he's a guard right he's he's a guard strictly
he's no longer a tackle so you have um and there's no starting job open you know uh John
Runyon is is penciled in as a starter and the rookie CeCe Maui Noah is penciled in as a starter
things can change but those are the starters right now the two guard spots so you have Aaron Stinney
who just keeps on showing up right it's a guy nobody thinks much of he's a he's got uh some
skins on the wall in the league he's a veteran guard who's on the team the last three years
Jake Kubas does he make the team again I don't know but he's might be ahead of Evan Neal right
now and you have the new guy they signed Daniel Fa'a, how do you say it, Fa'aeli, uh Fa'aeli,
Fa'aeli, Fa'aeli, I think yes you know massive guy massive you know 340 something um plays guard
um did not have a great year for the Ravens but Harbaugh agreed to sign the guy so I mean
Harbaugh pushed to sign a guy so he must like him somewhat you know he doesn't you know a lot
of the fans in Baltimore said why are the Giants signing this guy so these are all guys in the mix
certainly so Evan Neal is a guy in the mix he's not a favorite I talked to Mike Bloomberg the
offensive line coach in the spring and he said about Evan he said I think we're seeing the best
version of him in terms of how he's preparing now Bloomberg hasn't been around to see how he prepares
before this so that's kind of like coach speak you know what I mean for you know he's doing fine
right now I think the odds are stacked against Evan Neal um he's going to take reps with the
twos and often with the threes uh we'll see if he mixes in at all with the ones we'll see if any of
the starters the Pencildon starters Runyon and CeCe Maui know a falter a little bit it's all
about we'll see an opportunity and things like that but um I think Evan Neal it's an uphill
climb for him to make this roster two things Fa Lele Fa Lele is uh is how you pronounce this
shout out to uh Google AI for that one uh and when you talk about the like the coach's speech
from from coach uh from coach talking about Evan Neal yeah he hadn't seen him in the past so he
didn't know what that preparation was like I'd taken that like when I heard that I'm thinking
like I'm hearing my dad speak and be like okay he probably spoke with the player and was asking the
player what do I need to do as a coach to make you better and it's probably something where Evan
kind of came to him like my preparation has to be better and whether I'm playing guard or tackle
where my eyes need to be and like you know my footwork that sort of thing so I'm thinking he's
saying that and then using that to try and give you something to write about and and to give you
something to just outside of just that that flat coaches speak that you hear coaches say sometimes
but I think that's a conversation that player and the coach had and he's like okay this is how
I can help as a coach by helping this guy and being on this guy when it comes to his preparation
but like you say like my dad used to say when I was a kid I'm like Missouri the show me state
he's going to have to show that he belongs on this 53 um and this is the coaching staff that
did it because they got it kind of gave him a reprieve of execution um yeah I wrote a story
earlier in in in the offseason about Evan Neal working with LaCharles Bentley you know who's a
who's a renowned offensive line guy you know went out to Cleveland Charles Bentley has places I
think in Arizona and Cleveland he went to Cleveland Evan Neal picked up from Florida drove cross
country to Cleveland spent more than a week with him working out working out working out not posting
a million videos and things like that um so that was a certain amount of dedication and also Evan
Neal could have chosen to sign somewhere else people somebody would have signed into a veteran
minimum contract he wanted to come back to the Giants um would he have had a better shot somewhere
else maybe you know I mean don't forget with the Giants when the Giants fans think of Evan Neal he
is a failed first round draft pick if he went to any other team he would be a former first round
draft pick who has tremendous physical attributes who is getting another shot so he's going right
back into the lion's den here so um it's either folly or it's it's smart and it's you know it's a
courageous quote-unquote thing to do for Evan Neal to go right back to the belly of the beast to say
I want to succeed with the Giants I want to spend my training care for the Giants I think I can make
the Giants roster even though a lot of people have very negative thoughts about it speaking of getting
another shot it's the story of the offseason one three the battle of the one threes right now
former one three current run one three two guys that are fighting to make the roster forget even
cracking a starting lineup right now to make the roster and then we'll see what happens the former
one three obj is back in time and in town the current one three you were right you were right
back in time you that was that was a slip that was right is obj back in time you were you didn't
mean to say that but you're right it's like the miami heat with the slip in the introductory uh
press conference for for lebron james you know sometimes it happens it's it's you know it's it's
nature but hyatt obj who has the better chance of making the roster and which of the two if not both
do you see making the 53 well i know you have a soft spot for jalen hyatt i know you do um
if odell beckham jr is battling jalen hyatt for a roster spot then then that's bad news for odell
beckham jr look jalen hyatt is on the team there's no reason not to have him on the team right now
i mean if if i said that evan neal is a long shot to make the roster jalen hyatt is a long shot to
make the practice squad i mean he has shown very little in his time with the giants and he's you
know his career has gone from from not great as a rookie and steadily down i mean he wasn't even
dressing last year so um um you know i'd be shocked if he's he's still in the program at
the end of this barring a bunch of injuries so i think you know i'm putting him off to the side
that he's he's a he right now he's a training camp body that can run all day you know what
i mean which is you need a lot of receivers you know you were one of those guys right
yeah and you weren't drafted and they didn't mind running you into the ground right yeah because
yeah they're not going to run plaxico into the ground or omani into the ground they're going
to run you into the ground and so i think jalen hyatt's a guy that as long as he can stay out
there they'll run him into the ground and if he shows something great and if he doesn't they'll
just get cut at some point now you know i mean don't forget that remarkable really remarkable
one day in free agency where they signed braxton burials first right they signed braxton burials
first right after gunny gunner um olszewski got hurt so okay that's kind of a like for like we
said okay that makes sense will they sign another receiver maybe then they sign odell beckham jr
and i said okay now they got two receivers and then they signed juju smith schuster so i don't
we can discount juju smith schuster here either um so between barrios odell and juju smith schuster
three guys signed in one day three veterans does one of them make the roster does barrios
you know take the punt return job does he make the roster and then as a you know backup slot
receiver he's a special teamer maybe um juju smith schuster had some juice in him you know but he's
clearly not what he was and odell you know has really not been a vibrant player in the league
for three or four years let's face it and he has no special teams value he does not play special
teams so um does odell make the team at this point i would probably bet no i wouldn't bet against him
because he's harbaugh likes him but i just you know if guys are healthy all around him all the
guys we mentioned who are battling for wide receiver one two and three spots they're all
ahead of him and we even mentioned they have isaiah likely and they have you know who's a new
tight end who's going to be a weapon in the passing game as well so maybe you can carry one
less receiver um odell has to stay healthy he has to prove he can withstand the rigors of training
camp then he has to show something it's a lot it's a lot for you know for him to do that at age 33
and i if he does that paul then i and i know it's an if but if he's able to stay healthy throughout
the course of training camp if he's able to show that he can handle the rigors of training camp at
33 years old i think they're going to find a spot for him on the football team because all throughout
the course of the spring what do we see he was coming down with the catches he was making catches
and i think that's one thing that i know we can see the speed and darnell moody the speed and
the darius sladen and he kind of has to make the team because of the contract situation but just
year after year after year the giants receiver room has been plagued with drops so keeping a
sure hand in there whether it's that fourth receiver and i get he doesn't add any special
team value he's not going to play gunner he's not going to rush punts and try and block punts
hold a guy up as a pester on the pump return team but i can see him i can see them getting down to
the nitty-gritty where they're making the case on why a guy should be cut why a guy should stay
and o'dell is going to have a couple catches that came from jamis winston throughout the course of
one of these preseason games and you're going to look at it and be like all right the four two four
three still not there uh he took a you know we had to we had to give him a vet day here or there
but the boy still has mitts the boy still has mitts so you know i i think i don't know i don't
know i'm with you he's got to show it i won't bet for it but i won't bet against it as well
but it's going to be an interesting camp battle when it comes to which one of these receivers
is going to be on the in and who's going to be on the out we talked about the starting
battle for cb1 cb2 and you mentioned not wanting to throw a rookie out there in year one in a colton
hood here's a rookie that was thrown out there in a wink martindale defense and gave us some hope
but we haven't seen that hope since does tay banks make this roster paul i think it's all up
to him you know i think talent wise he makes the roster there's no question about it um is he a
changed man is he got the the extreme work ethic that he has not shown can he put to back to back
to back good practices together now he did show himself as a pretty capable kick returner last
season so so you can you know you can't you don't want your starting cornerback is not going
to be returning kicks for the most part um unless it's deon sanders you know what i mean okay we're
not he's not he's not deon sanders but can your fourth or fifth cornerback return kicks certainly
so that is a role that he could fill it's not a joke it's a role he could fill um physically big
strong uh fast you know he's got everything in that regard is his work ethic and his attention
to detail can he be technical um if they put him in more press man coverage which is what he
i wouldn't say excelled in but he certainly was was capable of doing that as a rookie under wink
martindale um i think they're going to get back to a little more of that this year under denard
wilson that will help dionte banks um he's also what is he 25 years old is he even 26 yet he's
a young guy he's healthy so um now he's a guy as opposed to evan neal or even odell i would say
there's a definite pathway for him to make the roster um as long as his head is in the right
place and he stays healthy the talent is there you know i i talked to some guys on the giant staff
and they said we can see what the new staff the guys who haven't worked with him yet um or just
starting to work with him they say we can see why he was the first round pick you know coming off
the bus he's a guy who you want on your team and as giants fans and former coaches learned he was
also a guy you didn't want on your team because he just gave up on plays and just didn't seem to
have the consummate professional attitude you need um if he is indeed a changed man and can show that
in the locker room and on the practice field there's a place for him on the roster yeah i was
always a bubble guy throughout the course of my my nfl career and i think he makes the roster because
of what you said there's there's something that we always say like whether it's a special teams
coach or your receiver coach or maybe in his situation your your corners coach and they're
going to be in front on the board in the meeting in front of everybody and they're going to be
talking about what you're going to have to do to make this this roster colton hood you're on this
roster paulson adibo you're on this roster greg newsom more than likely you're on this roster
but when he talks about the maybe the fourth fifth sixth corner they we always say the more
you can do brandon london didn't excel on special teams but tay banks can excel on special teams
maybe even more as a kick returner pump returner he's been now he's put himself in position or
you know not to put no blame on him he's now in the position where you have to show more than what
they drafted you to be able to do so he's done that with the two huge kick returns we saw like
you said put speed on tape now you're gonna have to not only do that but you may also have to play
a little pester you may even have to line up as a gunner here or there like you're going to have
to try and make this roster and i think this will be good for him in a sense because you have no
you can't act like a first rounder anymore when they call special teams you can't just be hanging
off to the side sitting on your helmet talking to brian burns and those guys you're not in that
position anymore you got to go over there you may have to dive and tackle a donut or something
you're in that position so we're going to see and we're going to see early paul what that work ethic
is going to be like because now like we say you're in the hood now you're in the ghetto
in terms of like the practice squad guys like that little room they had for us back in the day
we were at giant stadium when the facility they called that the hood because it was the low level
low rent not making too much money guys that had to dog it that had the dog fight day in day out
he's now in that bubble he's in that community now so we're going to see we are going to see
if he has champagne taste with beer money or if he's able to uh if he's able to kind of knock back
md 2020 and then go out there and show guys that hey i belong i belong with the champagne and the
duce uh let's whatever what's so now we'll move on we'll talk about just overall training camp
paul i think what's the one maybe like the one position or maybe you know one side of the ball
that you are excited to watch the most and you need to see the most from um i would say there's
a couple i'll give you a couple okay um look the offensive line four or five of the same guys you
know i mean and they're just putting in a rookie in so um we're going into this summer more stable
the offensive line and they've been in a decade so hopefully that's a good thing um i'm very excited
to see um the outside linebackers no question about it burns abdul carter and cave on thibodeau
and here's something is cave on thibodeau capable of challenging to supplant abdul carter as a
starter um what did we hear during the spring cave on thibodeau was the hardest worker of
everybody in that room charlie bullen the outside linebacker coach told me that and brian burns
admitted it when is the last time a player says yeah he outworked me this spring and brian burns
was the hardest worker you know on the team last spring so burns said yeah cave on has worked harder
than me this spring and i'm proud of him so that's a little battle we can see they're both gonna play
look carter and thibodeau are both gonna play a lot but does thibodeau going into a a his likely
his last year with the giants playing on the fifth year option does he kind of say you know what i'm
not letting this second year guy beat me out i'm going to i want i should be the starter alongside
burnsy so that i think that's a battle and i'm very anxious and i'm interested in seeing the
two new inside linebackers um they both look like outside linebackers you know tremaine edmonds
is is is you know looks like matthias kiwanuka basically i mean it just looks like a big long
rangy spider-man type outside linebacker and the rookie arvel reese is every bit six foot four
and looks like looks like a prototype edge rusher and he's in it he can rush the edge and he had a
you know he was saying a ascending edge rusher at ohio state but he is an inside linebacker so
you know this looks a lot different than micah mcfadden and um darius muasal and bobby o'carracade
it looks a lot different they look like they don't belong in the same room those guys you know and
obviously um micah mcfadden's back that's great i think he makes the team is kind of like a jack
of all trades guy but uh clearly john halbar's vision and denard wilson's vision for this
defense is to have big big long um you know kind of like uh you know basketball type
players playing inside linebacker and he got them both and and one position battle we didn't talk
about which i think i have to talk about at least briefly is one that is very near and dear to john
harbaugh's heart because he's a special teams guy at heart place kicker you know this is a derby you
know the past years it was graham gannot graham gannot was the starter and they had some younger
guy in and he was kind of taking the kicks away and we'll see what happens but as long as graham
was healthy he was the starter graham gannot is not on the team anymore you have dominic
zavada the rookie from michigan undrafted and you have ben sauls who was undrafted out of pit came
you know to the team late last year went eight for eight on field goals he's a lefty kicker so
that's a little bit of a different look he was not great you know don't forget they signed chase
and saunders right and they cut him you know he was a veteran and i think if you ask both of us
when they signed him will he be the kicker we'd say yeah probably he's been a good kicker in the
league and they cut him they said they could bring him back but he's cut so and he's he's
with the the jets signed him didn't he didn't the jets sign him yeah um so place kicker i mean i
think it's more than likely that the giants place kicker to start the season in dallas is not yet on
the roster it's someone who is out there going to kick for somebody else who's going to get cut
and the giants will sign him so um and i would say if you ask me one two right now i would say
savada has the upper hand on sauls because savada was better in the spring but he's a rookie and
we'll see how it goes but look you can say a place kicker not a big deal i'm not excited but
if it's a close game that's sunday what is it september 13th against the cowboys we know the
cowboys kicker is going to make the field goal will the giants kicker make the field goal we
don't know who the kicker is we don't know if we'll make it so it'll be pretty important to be
continued uh one real quick when you talk about tremaine edmonds i just did a shoot with uh left
tackle for the buffalo bills deon dawkins and he had nothing but great things to say about tremaine
edmonds at the time they spent together in buffalo and he was saying like trust me he still got it
that dude was going to be an anchor in the middle of that linebacking corps so that was really cool
to hear him talk about it and then two you were talking about special teams i gotta shout out
like this is a guy like i forget what who said it but you know that thing where someone was like
i wasn't familiar with your game until this dude showed up at otas and he was booming them and it
got to the point paul where instead of watching braxton barrios kind of just only catch the punt
i had my phone on the punter because i wanted to see not only the punt but the trajectory
and how it was landing and how he was making guys back up and run forward i think this dude is going
to be he is he is going to be the most underrated signing the giants have this offseason so keep
jordan stout as healthy as possible uh and throughout the course of training camp at all
costs uh paul let's wrap this up because we're almost pushing 40 minutes right now uh green bar
greenbrier resort in white sulfur springs west virginia what can the fans expect shoot what can
me and you expect you know i've never been there i've heard a lot about it and i've talked to
people in the nfl who have had training camps there um look it's a luxury resort um it's hosted
28 presidents i looked all this stuff up 28 presidents have stayed there they they like to
it was opened in 1778 the rider cup was there in 1979 i believe um so it's i heard it's a little
dated you know it's a little bit of a dated facility but it has training camps the browns
were there two years ago the saints were there several years ago so you know it's used to you
know and and i know um you know college teams go there sometimes nfl teams when they're staying
when they have like a week to to to stay on the east coast they they they'll go there for a few
days and practice so this is not like unfamiliar territory for this for this resort they do house
nfl teams so that'll be interesting this was not john harbaugh saying um i want to take the team
away we're going to get out of you know we're going to get out of dodge we're going to go to
some isolated location and and then bond and hunker down the giants couldn't practice their
own facility this year that was whether john harbaugh was the coach or you know brandon
london was the coach uh they couldn't practice there so um because the facilities get all kinds
of upgrades and renovations so this is where they picked um little known fact that there is a bunker
do you hear about this brandon there's a bunker there's a bunker underneath the facility that
was built in the 1950s in the cold war it was built there in secret the government built a
there in secret that if there was a nuclear attack the entire congress could be brought
to this bunker it's big enough for the entire congress could go to this bunker and stay there
and it was a secret for 30 years until obviously that we felt the cold war was no longer you know
first and foremost in our fears and in our minds and now you can go there i'm going to tour it you
can tour it down there so we can tour it together we um better make sure we don't get locked into
the bunker right because i don't think banging on the doors people will hear us and um um so you
know it's going to be different it's going to be different i spent 16 or 17 years at the university
of albany in training camp that was a college campus this is a resort it's different you were
at albany you know the lay of the land there you liked it there you know that's where you
your nfl foundation was laid right you know i'm sure you have some good and strange and
you know weird memories of being in albany um probably many of which we can't repeat
um but um this will be different you know this will be this is a luxury resort but look once
i get on the field now the the altitude is 1800 feet above sea level you know i think um uh east
rutherford is like 12 feet below above sea level or something so i think it's going to be a little
cooler maybe the air will be a little crisper um i'll still be wearing my hat that we talked about
but um it's going to be different and and um i think the players will probably enjoy bonding and
being together um you know but like i said 10 practice in 11 days not going to be a time for
a whole heck of a lot of them practicing and resting and you know getting some good meals
and hopefully yeah i'm a dad now paul and i'm responsible so i'm gonna keep those albany
stories to myself i'm gonna bury them in the book the bunker down in a white sulfur springs at the
that's another episode of blue rush our final episode until training camp ladies and gentlemen
the giants have six open practices down there for the fans so come on down august 1st is going to
be the back together weekend that saturday of course i'm gonna be hyping the crowd up got some
stuff to do it uh nfl network or esb and whoever's covering uh the giants practice that day but come
on down take pictures paul's coming out take pictures with paul in the hat repost we love it
uh paul appreciate you uh hopping on uh today and i will see you down in white sulfur springs
next week my friend yes sir first for both of us
