AI GeneratedTaylor (known online as Tay Bay), a business analyst and former college basketball player, discusses how reading became a vital tool for healing after she experienced significant personal loss. She shares her journey from using books as an escape from grief and depression to building a fun, engaging social media presence that promotes reading to others.
I'm good. How are you? I'm doing good. So I came across your Instagram. You were doing some dance moves
With like a trend. I don't know if it was like your book husband or whatever and I was like, oh my god
Her vibe is like so fun
So tell us a little bit about who you are where you're from and what really sparked your interest in reading
Yeah, of course, so my name is Taylor most people online know me as Tay Bay I was born in, California
but raised in Georgia, I
Graduated from Locust Grove High School, and then I was offered a full-ride basketball scholarship to attend
Emanuel University in Franklin Springs, Georgia
I graduated with my degree in
organizational communication
And now I'm a business analyst, I'm a wife, I'm a dog mom
And how I got into reading was right after I graduated
I ended up losing my grandma and two of my siblings within a very short period of time
So I was going through a lot
I was dealing with grief anxiety
Really bad depression and I ended up picking up the teacher by Frieda McFadden and I was like, oh
So this is how the girls are escaping their reality. Gotcha. And now the rest is history
yeah, and it's so fun how you were able to kind of take that grief and turn it into something great as to what you're
Doing on social media because you're promoting reading while you're having fun with it
And then it makes it so entertaining, which I'm pretty sure it's a workout for yourself the way you did it bopping around the room
My knees with a game
So, what would you say is like one of your top reading genres?
Romance, definitely romance because I mean you have romanticy
You have urban romance like most books have some type of romance in there
so I would say romance for sure and then I know a couple of your books that you sent over was the favorite girl by
Monica and just the cover kind of looked like this is kind of mysterious like what is yeah
So what drew you to this book and what did you like about it?
So the favorite girl by Monica Arya my book club actually picked that as our first book club read together
And I'm not really a dark
Girly, like dark romance is not my normal like Avenue and when we picked it thinking the cover
Okay, this is not gonna be that bad
No, like literally it was the housemaid on steroids
You follow this girl named Demi and she actually escaped her captor and she came across a ad
Where first of all red flag that she ignored the ad was a live-in position
You could only wear white. You can't have any fragrances. No nail polish
And you have to always talk quietly
Very weird
Accepted the position second red flag was the family. But of course you have to read it if you want to know more
That I feel like no
That's that's almost the equivalent of like finding some on Craigslist and if you've meeting up with the person like not at the police station
But it's on a whim you're like, oh, yeah, this is gonna go great. Do you want to die?
Like why would you do that?
Exactly. It was definitely given desperate times call for desperate knees because she was on the run
So it's like I kind of feel her but then I kind of don't cuz I'm like girl enough is enough
You got to read the red flag. Yeah, I know if that was us we would have been like
Excuse no
And then another one was broken glass houses and
That one kind of had a little twist because I kind of read the synopsis for it
So a couple of these especially the favorite girl
So what would be what would you say is like a pro and con with this book
So broken glass houses actually is a arc that I've read and it comes out
September 22nd of this year
Pro and con con
Would be it's going to have you shedding tears in the first five chapters
And it takes a lot for me to like break down
But bro would definitely be somebody that like for me that dealt with a lot of grief and trauma
I was highlighting so much in that book and it seriously helped me so much with like realizing
Okay, like I'm not the only one that has deal with something like this and I'm not alone
So that book it it's literally amazing and I would recommend it for everybody to read when it comes out
Yeah, and it's funny how grief kind of comes in waves
that was what I learned like I saw that quote somewhere and it was after I lost my grandmother back in 2023 and
It was just this thing where I was just like it comes away. You got a role with it
sometimes you could be happy everything is normal and then like the slightest remembrance of something and you're like kind of back it number is
Level one and you know, I'm happy you were kind of able to find something and a hobby
You know that reading can be fun
But it can also be a way of kind of escaping your reality and kind of help and deal with your grief
Especially if you don't really want to openly talk about it
Let you go is there anything else that you would like to say to fellow book lovers out there
Um, I would say read a book and obviously for also people that don't read
Don't say that you're not a reader like my best friend. She's like I'm not a reader. I
Sent her an audiobook. I think it was lucid dreams by Lady Nisha and she was like, oh my gosh
I think I'm a reader. I'm like, yes, you can read physically even if you feel like, you know, you can't sit in one spot
Pick up an audiobook like seriously reading other people's stories
We really can feel and understand that we're not alone in the things that we're going through
So that's what I would say
And I love telling people whenever they say I don't read you just haven't found
Your book yet that you like
Like it and once you do kind of taste the waters a little bit see what you like
See what you don't like give you like at least five chapters and then move on to something else
But you haven't found what you loved and once you do you're gonna be like the rest of us. You're gonna be hooked
So much for taking the time to come and chat with us. I greatly appreciate it. Of course. Thank you for having me Sydney
