This is the Padres ACHILLES HEEL...
Jul 24, 2026
This is the Padres Achilles heel as this position has screwed them out of so many games.
Who are the players screwing them? Can they be fixed or is it just washed? Let's talk about it.
Hi, welcome back to another episode of Padres Digest with your host Andrew. Today we're going
to answer the question, what is the biggest problem with this team? It is pretty apparent
we've had a lot of problems but I think this is definitively the worst problem on this team
and I still think it's solvable. So what am I talking about? Like I said, we'll talk about it.

If you or your child spent years growing up on social media and experienced serious mental
health struggles, you should hear this. Recently a jury ordered Meta and YouTube to pay millions
for their role in designing and promoting addictive platforms. They knew their apps
could contribute to anxiety, depression and body image issues but did not share those risks while
prioritizing profits. The recent historic verdict underscores the consequences of those decisions.
Now Morgan & Morgan is stepping up to hold these platforms accountable for the harm they caused.

Like I think without Canning or Geo or whoever else, we could be at least over 500. Like give
me some 4ERA scrub who is still better than Canning. We could absolutely be above 500 right
now if it wasn't for Geolito, if it wasn't for Griffin Canning. Which sucks because I
thought they were going to be our saviors this year and they weren't. They were our
destructors. Whatever the opposite of a savior is. Like the offense is slowly coming back.
Ty France is hot, Jackson Merrill is playing hot, Manny Machado is on fire,
Todd Teese is hitting home runs. Like this team's offense has fixed itself
mostly. We still have our overarching problems of horrible play discipline. Like we have what,
like 13 strikeouts today? What was the exact number? I'll say it right here. 15 strikeouts.
Like we made Chris Sayle, well Chris Sayle's a good pitcher, don't get me wrong,
but we made Chris Sayle look like Prime Chris Sayle. Like it was, I saw a clip where the
Raze broadcast was like, while Freddie Fairmean was at the bat, they were like,
this is going to be the 11th strikeout. He's going to throw a sweeper and he's going to
miss and fall down. And what happened? Literally Freddie Fairmean missed completely, fell down
swinging. Like that's how bad our play discipline is, right? But we at least are scoring runs.
Like look at the score, 5-6. If Griffin Canning was at least a little bit better,
we would have won this game. We scored 3 against Chris Sayle, which is already,
it kind of reminds me of that Jacob DeGrom game where we would have won,
we scored 5 in the first inning and then Randy Vasquez imploded. Like there are multiple,
actually Randy Vasquez did it twice. Like there's multiple ways that this team could have won
multiple different games if we just had a different pitcher pitching. So that's why I'm
saying like genuinely if we were to buy and just get too serviceable, I'm not saying great, I'm not
saying good, serviceable starters, we could be a better team. We could make the playoffs. I'm not
saying we could win the World Series. That would be like a long shot. And maybe in that case,
why we even bother doing it. But like it's incredible just how much starting pitching has
just absolutely screwed us out of so many different games this year. And like we all knew the writing
was on the wall like at the start of the year. Like we were all like, okay we have a bunch of
scrubs to fill the five slot. And then we lost Musgrove, then we lost Pavetta, like that screwed
us. Don't get me wrong, that definitely screwed us. But the pieces were never really there in
place to start. Like Walker Buehler has had good outings, bad outings, like I'm fine with him. But
like Randy Vasquez needs to figure it out. Canning needs to go. Giolito needs to go. I would rather
have Waldron start over Canning right now and Waldron sucks. So that's why I'm saying at least
bare minimum give me some four ERA scrub at the deadline and we could at least get above 500 and
maybe complete for a wildcard spot, the last one at least. Because we're pretty bad at starters
right now. But like I was showing you, let me just show you this again. Ranjifo has surprised me so
much and I absolutely love it for him. So thank you for being who you are. Ty France is on fire
with home runs recently. Tatis at least gets on base and has a good play discipline. And Machado
is hitting again. So that's cool, right? But Canning imploded again. The Padres rotation isn't tenable
and yet with every poor outing from a member of that rotation, the Padres get further from being
buyers at the deadline and landing the starters they obviously need. And Arizona is not looking
back right now. They're playing pretty good. So basically we're screwed for right now. Hitting-wise
though, I mean it wasn't amazing. Like we always score relatively late, which is also our downfall.
But you know, 15 strikeouts, not good. Like Ranjifo, yes he had a good game but he's also striking
out three times, which isn't great. Machado, also a good game. Twice. Ty France, a fine day. Twice.
Like Fermin had a hit at least, but striking out. Like everyone struck out at least once besides
Merrill. So that's not great. One for four is not great. But it was, it should have been enough is my
point. It should have been enough. I would even have Kyle Hart starting over anybody right now.
Kyle Hart had a clean inning. Like hate on him all you want, but he is nowhere near as bad as
Canning is, right? Canning, five hits, five runs, four in runs, four strikeouts, three home runs.
Three home runs in 2.2 innings. Harris, Albies, and Smith. Dom Smith? Dominic Smith? The fourth
was two thousand and thirty-two. Two thousand. That was getting obliterated, right? Papa Frank
said the pitching equivalent of a movie that purposely tries to be so bad that they're good
and are just really bad. Season ERA is 6.97. He cannot start. Changeup is good. 107, 2.91
expected WOBA. Slider is fine. 107. Like those are good pitches, but the fastball is getting
destroyed. 87 stuff. Like it doesn't matter how many good pitches you have. If you're throwing
the fastball and getting demolished, what do you have? Nothing. 5.66 overall expected WOBA
is not going to win you many games. Hart, Matsui, Rodriguez, they were clean. Waldron gave up two
solid innings with one run, which honestly is fine. It's fine. The bullpen did its job. The starter,
the bulk starter, I did air quotations, you can't see me, is not working. Griffin Canning is done.
I don't want him starting anymore. He's had so many games to prove if he's any good or not.
He's not. Like I know we're low on starters right now. I hope that when Estrada comes back,
we can get rid of Canning, but like I would rather call up a AAA guy and see what he has,
because he can't be as bad as Griffin Canning is. That's my whole point. Griffin Canning
sucks. When I see this stat, he sucks. He might be the worst starting pitching I've ever seen
in a Padres uniform. I can't think of anyone worse. I would rather have Clayton Richard
pitching for us. I would rather have prime Joey Lucchese pitching for us. I just saw a stat that
says Eric Lauer pitching for the Dodgers. The Dodgers have not lost a game while Eric Lauer
starts. Why can't we have that? Like give me Andrew Kashner. Give me Tyson Ross. Tyson Ross
was legit. Give me anybody. Give me anybody. Give me anybody over Griffin Canning. I miss
Kashner though. Give me James Shields. I would rather have James Shields over Griffin Canning.
God, I'm upset with him. He sucks. But yeah, I'm upset. But what do you guys think? Do you
think this is the biggest Achilles heel and it gets fixable if we find replacements, or do you
think we should just completely sell? I'm going to have a video I made yesterday before the game
about selling to buy. So just know it's a little outdated from my opinion right now,
but it's not not fully outdated. Does that make sense? So just watch that in a couple hours.
But yeah, thank you guys so much for watching. What do you think? Canning? Gone? Team? Screwed?
