The New Yorker writes that the next stage of the war could be especially painful for Russia : Ukrainian long-range strikes are increasingly turning the Russian rear into a separate front. For Ukraine, this is not a new reality: Russia has been targeting Ukrainian cities, energy sectors, and civilian infrastructure for four years now. But for Russia itself, as a Moscow military source acknowledged, the situation is different: this is the first time Russians have experienced such a massive shock.
"They're used to it. But we're seeing it for the first time," a source told The New Yorker. Russia's vast territories are no longer an advantage, a source in Moscow's defense circles acknowledged . "Our great historical advantage, our strategic depth—vast expanses that slow or trap an enemy's advance and where Russia can build energy infrastructure and weapons factories—has now become a huge disadvantage," the source said. The publication writes that the war is now effectively being waged on two fronts. The first is on the ground, primarily in Donbas, where Russia continues its offensive, but its pace has slowed significantly in 2026. The second is in the skies over both countries, where the number of drones, the range of strikes, and the ability to overwhelm air defenses are decisive. For Russia, this changes the entire logic of war. The vast territory the Kremlin has always considered an advantage is turning into a weakness . Oil refineries, warehouses, airfields, factories, substations, railways, ports, and cities hundreds and thousands of kilometers from the front must be defended, and air defense systems are insufficient to cover them all. "They have to defend vast territories, and there aren't enough air defense systems to protect them," said Ukrainian military analyst Nikolai Beleskov. Ukraine has dramatically increased drone production. According to The New Yorker, Fire Point produced just over two thousand FP-1 drones in all of 2024, but now assembles the same amount in about ten days. Ukraine has also acquired FP-5 "Flamingo" cruise missiles.
Military analysts say that the Kremlin seems to have placed its bets on the wrong war horses, while Western sanctions hobble its attempts to scale up the manufacturing of new weaponry. Moscow invested heavily in making drones, mostly the constantly-modified versions of Iranian-designed Shaheds, and Iskander ballistic missiles.
“That’s something that lets it painfully strike Ukraine, but doesn’t solve the defence of Russia’s rear,” Nikolay Mitrokhin, a researcher with Germany’s Bremen University, told Al Jazeera. Russia appears to be in retaliation mode; this week its strikes have killed dozens across Ukraine, including in the capital.
