As a result of the SBU strike on the Engels-2 military airfield in the Saratov region of Russia, a Tu-95 strategic bomber was literally broken in two. According to a report by "Schemes" of Radio Liberty, the plane's tail was literally torn off.
The publication cited a satellite image from Planet Labs. The image shows the plane's condition on July 19. "It appears that one of the Russian Tu-95 strategic bombers at the Engels-2 airfield near Saratov suffered critical damage. The photo clearly shows the tail section of the plane completely 'detached' from the main body," the journalists noted.
These aircraft are known to have been used in strikes against Ukraine using Kh-101 missiles. However, Russia no longer produces such aircraft. As a reminder, according to the Security Service of Ukraine, Ukrainian long-range drones traveled approximately 800 kilometers to Engels, hitting a bomber while parked. The SBU added that Russian strategic aviation can no longer feel safe even at the most remote military airfields.
At the same time, expert Ivan Stupak noted that intelligence provided by Western partners is crucial in such operations. Answering a question about how complex the destruction of the Russian Tu-95 in Engels was and whether we can expect other similar hits, he noted that we do not know what was used to do it or what methods were used.
"However, according to the SBU, the aircraft's tail section was torn off, and it will no longer operate. Furthermore, it was reported that it had repeatedly participated in massive shelling of Ukrainian territory. This means it will no longer operate," Stupak emphasized. According to him, depending on how this operation was carried out, it will be possible to predict whether it can be scaled up:
"Because if, for example, it was a person who was nearby and launched a small missile at the plane, then we understand it was a one-off action. If it was something else, for example, our long-range missiles or long-range drones intercepted the plane during landing, takeoff, or while it was parked on the airstrip, then that's a completely different story."
At the same time, he says, this certainly would not have happened without the help of Ukraine's Western partners, whose intelligence services assist our country.
"Without this intelligence, without an understanding of what and where is located at a specific moment in time, unfortunately, we cannot conduct such operations independently," the former SBU officer noted.
After all, it's essential to accurately "catch" the aircraft while it's unprotected. It should be added that, amid constant strikes at the Engels Air Base, construction of large protective shelters for strategic bombers continues. According to satellite data, at least 17 shelters are under construction. The shelters are sized to accommodate the Tu-95MS and Tu-160 strategic bombers that will likely be hidden there.
Work on the base has been ongoing for at least a year and began just days before the start of Ukraine's Operation Spider's Web, which took place on June 1, 2025. This marks the first time that Russia has focused on protecting strategic aviation, whereas previously the priority had been tactical aircraft.
