Tradition that's been around for more than a century. Sailboats that left port
here on yesterday are beginning to arrive on Mackinac Island this morning.
Our Lauren Edwards is there as the Bayview Mackinac race wraps up. Lauren,
you've been on this since yesterday. How exciting is it to see everything on
Mackinac now?
Oh, Mackinac is beautiful. Jamie, I can tell you boat girl summer has moved up
here, so I'm thinking part of our trip is going to be up this way. But let's
talk about the race because this race, it is always phenomenal. I have next to
me Allie. She is the regatta director. I almost called you Allie regatta, but I
think I think we're both tired. But first of all, I want to ask, how are you
doing? Because organizing events like this is a lot. It is a lot, but it's so
exciting. There's so much energy and excitement around this event because
crews and skippers are preparing all year to be able to get their boats
ready to be on the starting line each July. And I know yesterday, you know,
so fun being at Port Huron, seeing all the boats go out. And I think there's
around 200 that were coming on up. But there was weather. Let's talk just a
little bit about what happened. Yes, there was some weather. So after the
start of the race, there were conditions that were, you know, it got
really windy and it got really wavy. So with that being said, right now we had
193 boats actually start the race and of those 85 of them have since retired.
So what that means is they've gone into port. Some of them are back at Bayview
in Detroit. Some of them are along different harbors along the shoreline
and everyone is safe and accounted for. That is the best news. So every single
one of our crew members on those 85 boats is accounted for and safe at this
point. And what exactly does that mean? If you can break it down for viewers,
it's you know, was it the wind? Was it the rain? What does that look like on a
boat when you're in distress? Sure. So rain, no big deal. You get splashed all
the time. But when the wind gets to be too intense, a lot of times what
happens is you'll have equipment failures. So we saw sales ripping, we
saw mass coming down. So it's more so about making sure that the crew is
staying safe and also that you have the power and ability to continue on the
So when your sales rip, you don't have a ton of backup sales on board. You can't
keep sailing. So you have to turn on your engine and head for home. Yeah,
you can't pull the sails out of your backpack and be like, put this up. No,
that's not how it works. But emphasize once more, you know, everyone's okay.
Yes, we are very fortunate that everyone is safe. We did not have any man
overboard situations. Everyone stayed on the vessels and everyone is accounted
for and safe at this time. Every single crew member. No, that is phenomenal. Now,
how do we keep the energy and the excitement going? Because this is still
so much fun. So the best part of this is everybody can still come up to the
island and join us for the awards party. Mission point is a phenomenal job of
putting on our award celebration up on the island. And we have some incredible
sponsors that have helped us to make that possible. And we are very excited
to welcome every single crew member and family member. Even if you did retire,
please come on up and join us for the party. Last question. Where can we see
those boats come in? Because that's that's the best part. Yes, that is a
great question. So we did have our very first boat round the Cove Island mark,
which is our longer course around seven a.m. This morning. So they're coming in.
Um, and then we have our short course boats. White Hawk is our leader for
that. No surprise there. Um, and then we should see our first couple of boats
trickling in later on this evening and then the rest of the fleet coming in
overnight. Got it. Got it. Well, thank you so much for joining me again. I
was about to call you alley regatta, but I love that. I like that nickname
for you. But it just has been so much fun being out here. And again, I can't
emphasize enough. People are okay. There are no injuries. Jamie, that's great
news. I'm so happy to report to you. We are happy to hear it. Lauren. Quick
question. Is there a popular boat that we're keeping our eye out on? Or is
there one from last year that that may have won? Do we know the name of that
boat?
I don't have a popular boat. We're keeping an eye on. Oh, there's some good
because they all looked so good yesterday. I can't quite remember the
name Jamie, but they were all looking good. They and there are some really
competitive boats out there to pro programs where it's all professional
sailors aboard. So I'll let you know, friend, there's that tracker so you can
follow along. I've been loving the boat names. All right, girl, have fun out
there. Not too much fun, though.
I'll try.
Thanks, Lauren. All right, let's get
