Dozens of tall ships from around the world are docked at Boston Harbor and you can tour them.
Boston 25 News reporter Carly Dion is on scene where the sail Boston kicks off this weekend.
Over the next several days nearly 60 ships from more than 20 countries will be right here in
Boston Harbor and we're getting an up-close look at these ships as they make their way
closer to shore. So to the crews of the 20 nations who have sailed here across oceans to be here,
to the veterans among us and to everyone gathered on the waterfront, welcome to Boston.
As the tall ships and military ships sail to their final port of sail 250, Bostonians and
tourists eagerly await their arrival. Ships like these turn Boston into a cultural capital
and global leader. About six miles off the coast those ships from around the world could be seen
making their way to shore Friday evening each one with a story to tell.
But these ceremonies remind us that when we reunite as a city and as a country and even
more as a global community we can navigate any of the storms and hard times that may lay ahead.
The ship that traveled the farthest distance to get here comes from India and the largest ship
in the fleet is this the Union from Peru measuring 378 feet long. Meanwhile this ship the U.S.
Coast Guard Eagle will be leading the pack in the harbor Saturday morning meeting with the USS
Constitution which will guide the tall ships in for the parade of sail. When she turns at
Charlestown tomorrow she will not just be leading a parade of ships she'll be leading a parade of
history. Organizers of the event hope Boston serves as a welcome city to all taking part
or here to enjoy. It is our pleasure to be in service to you but enjoy the next five six days
here because this is all about you enjoying our city and your city. But I want to urge you that
if you're walking down the street and you see a sailor from another country don't be shy walk up
to the group or the person and say welcome to Boston. Boston is the final port of sail 250
and wraps up on Thursday July 16th. In Boston Carly Dion for your local station Boston 25 News.
