Against the backdrop of a new round of confrontation between Iran and the United States, the political crisis within the Islamic Republic has entered an open phase. During a memorial ceremony for Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi were attacked by conservatives who oppose any negotiations with the administration of President Donald Trump.
The events in Tehran revealed a serious rift within Iran's leadership. During the funeral ceremony, President Masoud Pezeshkian clashed with aggressive protesters who opposed the negotiating process and was quickly escorted out by security.
At the same time, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was harassed by protesters, who pelted him with stones and shouted threats. The growing domestic political crisis coincided with a new escalation of the conflict with the United States. Following American strikes on targets on the Iranian coast, the IRGC launched retaliatory missile and drone strikes against US military bases in Kuwait and Bahrain.
President Masoud Pezeshkian has accused Washington of breaking the ceasefire, while sources in Iranian government circles speak of a deep crisis in the country's leadership, where a struggle continues between supporters of diplomacy and a tough military response.
Members of the president's inner circle are attempting to defuse tensions following the incident. The president's son and adviser, Yousef Pezeshkian, condemned the actions of radical activists, stating that such attacks undermine national unity and benefit only Iran's external adversaries.
Observers estimate that ongoing internal disagreements and the lack of a unified foreign policy strategy increase the risk of further destabilization of the government in the wake of Ali Khamenei's death and renewed US strikes.
Experts assessed the consequences of the rising tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, US President Donald Trump's harsher rhetoric toward Iran, the possible impact of US strikes, and Turkey's role in the situation. Analysts believe the situation is far more complex than it might initially appear. They noted that Donald Trump's policies should be judged by his actions, not his statements. Experts believe that the US's primary objective remains ensuring free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Lt. Col. Amit Yagur, former deputy head of the IDF's Palestinian branch of Military Intelligence, showed a map of targets attacked by American forces along the Iranian coast on the night of July 9. He said the strikes targeted naval bases, command posts, speedboat positions, and coastal missile systems.
The expert believes the operation was intended to limit Tehran's ability to influence shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. He singled out Chabahar, the location of the maritime traffic control center on the Gulf of Oman coast, as one of the key targets.
The expert added that US strikes also hit facilities in Bushehr, strategic targets on islands near the Strait of Hormuz, and several facilities in central Iran. The latter, he believes, were used to launch ballistic missiles. According to Yagur, the operation was aimed at ensuring the safety of shipping through the strait and weakening the Iranian Navy's capabilities in order to limit their capabilities without the conflict escalating into a full-scale escalation.
