Raytheon has begun searching for new European suppliers of components for the AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missile, Defense Express reports .
We are talking about the weapons that equip Ukrainian F-16s and most NATO fighters.
The company has already begun a series of studies to attract additional component manufacturers in Europe. According to reports, the project is being funded by the United States and several NATO countries; Belgium joined the initiative at the Alliance summit in Ankara.
Raytheon also expects other countries to join the project over time. However, the company did not specify whether the potential participants are limited to NATO member countries or whether the proposal is open to other countries as well.
According to Defense Express, if there are no restrictions for non-Alliance countries, Ukraine could theoretically localize the production of individual AIM-120 components. This would simultaneously increase missile supply volumes, strengthen the domestic defense industry, and enhance relations with partners.
"Even if Ukraine isn't involved in AIM-120 production, this is still good news for us. After all, Europeans' acquisition of more components generally means greater opportunities for supplying the missiles that the Ukrainian military uses on the F-16, NASAMS air defense systems, and that will be included in the JAS 39 Gripen arsenal," the analysts write.
As the publication explains, finding new suppliers and localizing production in Europe is a logical step for Raytheon and the American defense industry as a whole: this will allow it to increase weapons production faster than waiting for new capacity to be deployed in the US. As a reminder, The UK, France, and Germany have launched a $50 billion NATO initiative aimed at stimulating the development of long-range weapons without US involvement to close the gap in an area where Russia is significantly ahead, Bloomberg reports .
"Over the next decade, these three countries, along with other European allies, will work to develop strike systems capable of accurately hitting targets at ranges of more than 2,000 kilometers—the very capabilities that European countries currently lack in their arsenals," the article added.
As UK government officials noted, this programme will coordinate expertise, technological advances and industrial potential between participating countries. "The German Taurus missile and the British-French Storm Shadow/SCALP cruise missile, capable of striking targets at ranges of up to 500 kilometers, are the only two long-range weapons of this type in Europe. However, their numbers have been reduced due to the transfer of these missiles to Ukraine, which used them to strike Russian energy and military-industrial facilities," the publication noted.
Bloomberg adds that the shortage of long-range strike capabilities in Europe has long been a concern for NATO, which has intensified after US President Donald Trump canceled the planned deployment of BGM-109 Tomahawk missiles in Germany. The shortage of such weapons is due to the war with Iran, during which hundreds of these missiles were launched.
