Following the publication of high-quality images of the damaged Saki airport in occupied Crimea , it became clear how exactly Russian fighter jets are being hit while stationed in shelters, writes the military portal Defense Express .
The occupiers erected permanent shelters at 14 airbases around Ukraine. The first construction work began in the spring of 2024.
Photographs, particularly of the hit to the upper right shelter, show that the shelter's metal gate has been knocked out, and metal sheets are lying next to the shelter. A Su-24 frontline bomber, which was planned to be protected by tires, is parked next to the shelter.
"On the shelter, located in the upper left corner of the general image, a trace of the drone's warhead's explosion in the metal structure of the gate is visible. Also visible are parts of the metal structures lying nearby," the analysts write.
It is noted that similar pieces of metal are scattered near other shelters, directly indicating that the hits were aimed specifically at the gate structure. The shelter located at the bottom right of the group photo bears two impact marks. The authors added that the first hit hit the gate, and the second hit the concrete shelter itself.
Analyzing the photo, analysts noted that the Su-30 fighter jet parked nearby most likely had its vertical tail damaged. They suggested that the aircraft had been damaged during a previous attack.
Additionally, four Su-24 frontline bombers are visible in the upper right corner of the image. "They have damage inconsistent with airworthiness, but these aircraft were obviously hit much earlier, and the enemy is now attempting to use the damaged aircraft as decoys," the article added.
Thus, strikes on the gate plane became an effective way to neutralize the new Russian aircraft shelters. The parameters of this structural element are unknown, but it is known that standard Soviet shelters, such as the A13, used gates made of steel approximately 50 cm thick. As a reminder, on the night of July 1, the SBU launched an airstrike on the Saki military airfield in temporarily occupied Crimea. The operation targeted the airfield's infrastructure, specifically the hangars housing fighter jets. Two hangars housed fighter jets at the time of the strike. Following the attack, a fire was detected in the hangar housing the Su-30SM, indicating the successful destruction of the target.
On July 3, fighter jets at the Saki base were hit for the second time. Seven aircraft storage hangars were struck, housing Su-30SM, Su-30, and Su-24 fighters and frontline bombers. According to preliminary information, at least seven aircraft were destroyed or damaged.
