Ukrainian troops are proving they can strike virtually anywhere in Russia. As a result, safe places in Russia are becoming increasingly scarce, Axios reports.

It is noted that Ukraine is conducting a campaign of effective strikes against Russian territory, hitting oil refineries, weapons factories, convoys, and strategic aircraft. As a result, Russia is already facing shortages.

The publication emphasized that over the years of full-scale war, Ukraine's means and tactics have become increasingly sophisticated. For example, Flamingo missiles recently successfully hit their targets, including the Titan-Barrikady plant, which produces Russian artillery systems. Last year, Ukraine also carried out the daring Operation Spiderweb, striking Russian aircraft with drones smuggled across the border in trucks.

The publication noted that Ukraine currently relies heavily on domestically produced drones and modified missiles to strike areas such as Moscow and St. Petersburg, located far from the border. According to a report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, in 2026, Ukraine abruptly shifted the war to Russian territory, launching a series of short-, medium-, and long-range strikes aimed at disrupting and destroying Russian logistics and supplies. The report also states that this is a classic air strike, albeit using drones and missiles rather than aircraft. The same report estimates that Russia has suffered massive battlefield losses since the 2022 invasion – 1.4 million people. In this case the "kill zone" on the front, currently 20-25 kilometers wide, could increase to 30 kilometers by the end of the year. Brigadier General Yevhen Lasiychuk, commander of the 7th Corps of the Airborne Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, stated this in an interview with RBC-Ukraine .

Answering the question about how deep the "kill zone" is now, and whether it can be said that the "classic" line of contact no longer exists, that it has already been erased, he noted that both the line of contact and the rear of the battalion defense areas today are difficult to compare with those of 2022-2023.

"The scorched earth, the gray zone, the 'kill zone'—that's 20-25 kilometers. I think by the end of the year it will probably increase to 30 kilometers," the commander said. At the same time, Lasiychuk added, given that the enemy also has a similar zone, "this is already, consider, 50-60 kilometers – where there is scorched earth, where everything is controlled: both the movement and the movement of the enemy and our units."

"That is, in this zone, military personnel must be protected either by electronic warfare systems or under cover," he noted. As reported, Ukrainian troops are increasingly experiencing problems crossing the " kill zone ," which has turned the approach to forward positions into a separate combat operation. Moving through this section of the front sometimes takes several days and becomes the most dangerous part of the mission. Business Insider notes that to minimize human losses in this zone, Ukraine is trying to minimize the use of humans in frontline logistics, replacing them with unmanned systems and ground robots.
