Russian intelligence agencies view the military as a potential threat, leaving senior officers without adequate protection , according to Fox News .

They recalled that since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Russian generals have been killed as a result of missile strikes, drone attacks, car bombings, plane crashes, and combat operations at the front.

According to a European intelligence source, these losses are increasing tensions between the Russian military and the FSB - the powerful domestic intelligence agency that is the successor to the Soviet KGB. "There are internal tensions between Russian security agencies. The military wants the FSB to provide physical protection for Russian generals, but the FSB is unwilling to take responsibility for the military," the publication's source stated.

According to him, this conflict reflects a deeper rivalry within the system, where the intelligence services traditionally occupy a more privileged position than the armed forces. He added:

"This has been going on since Soviet times. The intelligence services don't like the military, and the military don't like the intelligence services."

A European intelligence source said the killings were important not only because of operational losses, but also because of the psychological impact on the Russian army.

"Putin understands that the loss of prominent Russian generals could impact morale in the Russian army, which is already low from a Russian perspective," he said.

According to Russian opposition politician Maxim Katz, the central contradiction is that the war has increased the importance of the army on the battlefield, while the political system in Moscow still views generals as a potential threat.

As a result, the Kremlin finds itself in a paradoxical situation: the army needs experienced commanders to continue the war, but the security services that dominate the system are reluctant to take responsibility for their protection.

Katz stated that the military had long occupied a vulnerable position in the Russian power structure:

"In Russia, the FSB is the largest and most influential security organization, and Putin himself comes from this system. The army, on the other hand, has always been perceived by these people as a threat."

He noted that the Kremlin has historically feared popular military figures because the army is one of the few institutions capable of challenging political power.

"You won't find Russian military personnel in high-ranking government positions. Since Stalin's time, they've been afraid of the army. Whenever a relatively well-known military figure with a name of his own emerges, they somehow manage it—legally, like with Prigozhin or other generals. There's no such thing as a popular general in Russia," Katz said.

Even during wartime, when the military might be expected to gain status, Putin's system maintains the army's political weakness, he said.

"The army doesn't participate in decision-making. It's currently funded, but all the money goes to the war. The generals are rich, but not as rich as ministers or FSB officers. Among the elite, they are the most disadvantaged," he added.
