Russian President Vladimir Putin has publicly acknowledged for the first time that Ukrainian strikes using long-range drones and missiles are creating serious problems for Russia. This is the clearest sign that the Kremlin is increasingly aware of the complexity of its position in the war against Ukraine. This opinion was expressed by British military expert Hamish de Bretton-Gordon in an opinion piece for The Telegraph .

The author notes that Putin called the military actions a "war" rather than the Kremlin's traditional "special military operation," which is extremely rare for a dictator. According to the expert, this is significant, given that the conflict has already lasted longer than World War I. The expert notes that in recent weeks, Ukrainian drones have been operating virtually unimpeded over Russia's western regions, particularly near Moscow and St. Petersburg. Despite the deployment of modern air defense systems to protect the capital, the Kremlin, according to the author, continues to be outmatched by Ukrainian ingenuity and ability to adapt quickly.

De Bretton-Gordon also draws attention to the consequences of Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil infrastructure. He argues that oil revenues have funded the Russian war machine for years, but now this resource is under increasing pressure. And all this is happening against the backdrop of massive losses at the front, with no apparent success. In this situation, Russian generals are also deceiving Putin. Fox News reports that the murders and attacks against Russian generals expose growing feuds within Putin's security apparatus. According to the publication, losses among senior officers are increasing tensions and exacerbating the conflict between the army and the FSB—the two main pillars of Putin's regime. The Russian military demands protection for its generals, but the security services are reluctant to take responsibility for their commanders' safety. "There are internal tensions between Russian security agencies," a European intelligence source told Fox News Digital. "The military wants the FSB to provide physical protection for Russian generals, but the FSB is unwilling to take responsibility for the military," he emphasized. According to the publication's source, the conflict reflects a deeper rivalry within the system, where the security services traditionally occupy a more privileged position than the military. "This has been going on since Soviet times. The intelligence services don't like the military, and the military don't like the intelligence services," the source noted. Since the start of the full-scale war, Russian generals have been killed in airstrikes, drone strikes, car bombings, plane crashes, and combat operations at the front. Fox News, citing Mediazona, reports that at least 15 Russian generals have been confirmed dead since the invasion began. Russian opposition politician Maxim Katz believes the central contradiction is that the war has increased the importance of the army on the battlefield, but the political system in Moscow still sees generals as a potential threat. As a result, the Kremlin has found itself in a dangerous trap. It needs experienced commanders to continue the war, but the power vertical doesn't trust its own army and is reluctant to protect its senior officers. This is no longer just a series of attacks on individual officers, but a symptom of the internal rift within Putin's system, the publication writes.
