Six signs and symptoms of piles, also known as hemorrhoids.
Rectal bleeding.
One of the most common symptoms of hemorrhoids.
Patients may notice a few drops of bright red blood on the toilet paper, on the surface of the stools, or in the toilet bowl after defecation.
The bleeding is usually painless, but it should never be ignored as sinister conditions like colorectal cancer can also give rise to a similar picture.
Itching or irritation around the anus.
Inflamed hemorrhoids can produce mucus that irritates the surrounding skin, leading to persistent itching, burning, or discomfort.
Pain or discomfort.
Pain is especially common with external hemorrhoids or when a blood clot forms inside a hemorrhoid, a condition known as a thrombosed hemorrhoid. The pain may become worse while sitting, walking, or passing stools.
Lump near the anus.
You may feel a soft lump around the anal opening. In some cases, internal hemorrhoids can prolapse and protrude outside the anus, causing discomfort and making hygiene more difficult.
Mucus discharge.
Some people notice a clear mucus discharge after bowel movements. This can soil underwear and further irritate the skin around the anus, causing itching and soreness.
A feeling of incomplete evacuation.
Even after finishing a bowel movement, you may still feel as though stool remains in the rectum. This uncomfortable sensation is often associated with prolapsed internal hemorrhoids.
