Russian dictator Vladimir Putin claims that Russia's advance on the battlefield is unstoppable and that Ukrainians cannot win a war of attrition. However, Ukraine's recent actions call this argument into question. The Wall Street Journal reports that medium-range attack drones are now the quintessence of Ukraine's new power.
According to Phillips O'Brien, professor of strategic studies at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, the key objective is to "defeat the Russian army from the rear." Western military doctrine calls this "air interdiction." It involves destroying, disrupting, distracting, and delaying the support functions that support the enemy's front line. To achieve this, Ukrainian drones are striking Russian command posts, communication lines, ammunition and fuel depots, drone control centers, logistics centers, and reserve forces.
Ukraine is also increasing long-range strikes against military and energy targets deep within Russia. These medium- and long-range strikes are forcing the Kremlin to make difficult decisions about the distribution of air defense assets and what should be left unprotected. The Ukrainians now have more short-range drones on the front than the Russians. Together, this "achieves an operational effect we haven't seen before on such a scale," says Kateryna Stepanenko of the Institute for the Study of War. Ukraine hopes to liberate all occupied territory, including Crimea, but one of its intermediate goals may be to force Russia to demilitarize the peninsula, which it uses for air strikes, troop training, and supplying the front. Ukraine recently launched attacks on highways, railways, and bridges on which Russia depends for logistics in Crimea, as well as on energy and transport infrastructure and air defense systems around the Kerch Strait.
Ukraine's repeated attacks on the Black Sea Fleet have already forced Russia to withdraw most of its fleet from Crimea, and strikes on other Russian positions and facilities could force Moscow to retreat even further, the article notes. At the same time, the WSJ cites several reasons that explain why it took Ukraine so long to begin large-scale strike operations. First, Kyiv had limited funds for weapons and competing urgent needs, including drones for the front and air defense. But now Europe has eased some of the initial restrictions that prevented Ukraine from using financial support to fund its military. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense and General Staff have allocated over $111 million for the purchase of medium-range weapons. Domestic manufacturers are now producing weapons with ranges of 15 to 125 miles. Ukrainians are also improving the ability of their drones to counter Russian electronic warfare.
Ukraine received a golden opportunity in February when SpaceX disrupted Russia's access to Starlink by disrupting military communications. Furthermore, Ukrainian soldiers are now skilled enough to conduct complex combined arms operations, a vital skill for medium-range strikes.
According to the Institute for the Study of War, Ukraine now has the advantage and initiative over Russia in the area of medium-range strikes. This increases the costs and risks for the Kremlin, while simultaneously weakening Russia's negotiating position.
