During the early months of 2026, there was much speculation that Russia’s coming summer offensive would prove the decisive campaign of the entire invasion. Many thought the Ukrainian army was already close to collapse, with Putin himself declaring in March that “there are reasons to believe we can finish off” Ukrainian forces. The stage seemed set for Russia to finally break Ukraine’s dogged resistance and win the war.
İt is now abundantly clear that Putin’s big summer offensive has failed. The Russian army has been unable to secure any front line breakthroughs or capture a single major city. The Kremlin’s ambitious plans to expand the war into northern Ukraine’s Sumy and Kharkiv regions have also fallen flat. As Ukraine drives the war back into Russia’s supposedly safe rear, Putin’s army no longer looks like a force advancing with confidence. Russian supply routes are being hit across occupied Ukraine, Crimea’s fuel system is under pressure, Moscow is adding defenses near civilian areas, and the Kremlin is losing the mobility and safety it built this war around. While that military pressure moves inward, a reported Kremlin-linked leak shows the political damage spreading inside Russia itself. Internal polling for United Russia reportedly found deep war fatigue, and public surveys show rising support for negotiations. Russians are not suddenly pro-Ukrainian; the danger for Putin is that more of them want the war ended, even if victory no longer looks realistic.
Because the war is consuming roads, fuel, air defenses, bridges, budgets, and public patience at the same time, the financial bill is moving toward ordinary citizens. Russian borrowing costs are rising, war spending is breaking through the plan, and politicians are openly discussing money sitting in private accounts. Putin promised a distant war fought by the state; now the cost is reaching Crimea, Moscow, the debt market, and savings Russians thought were still theirs. In this case Ukraine uses a variety of drones and missiles to strike Russian targets at long and medium ranges, causing significant damage to the Russian military machine.
As Bild reports , massive attacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in recent weeks have created four serious problems for Russian leader Vladimir Putin. 1. Deadlock at the front. The war is increasingly defined by drones, missiles, and air defense systems. There have been no strategic changes on the frontline since 2023, with both sides constantly attacking supply routes, ammunition trucks, fuel shipments, rail junctions, and road links. 2. Disruptions in military logistics. Ukraine is attacking oil refineries, fuel storage facilities, and railway infrastructure behind Russian lines. As a result, the damage to the Russian economy is enormous – both in terms of oil exports and in terms of supplies both domestically and at the front. 3. The inability to defend Crimea is becoming a political burden. 4. War has become an everyday reality for Russians. As a result of Ukrainian attacks—both on Crimea and on targets within Russia—the war is becoming clearly visible for the first time for a significant portion of Russians, and its economic consequences are clearly tangible. As a result, as Umland notes, "the war has transformed from a kind of computer game into an everyday reality for millions of Russians."
