In Lukyanivka, the Kyiv district hardest hit by the bombings , the white letters on a busy McDonald's melted in the fire that engulfed a nearby shopping center during Russia's latest major terrorist attack, according to The Guardian.

On heat maps showing the frequency of air raids in Kyiv, the area around Lukyanivska Square and the wider Shevchenkivske district stand out for the concentration of strikes over the past four years.

Locals say the situation has only worsened in recent months. In a vast, sprawling city where the devastation of war is virtually invisible, this corner of Kyiv feels more like a scene from the front lines. It is noted that the obvious reason for this lies across the busy street from the metro entrance: the long, red, broken facade of the destroyed Artem plant, once a weapons factory, now largely destroyed.

Significantly, the recent massive strikes also affected civilian buildings. The glass tower towering over the street has lost many of its windows. Two burned-out cars sit by the side of the road. The metro entrance, which has already been shelled five times, is boarded up in places, and passersby stop to look at the charred and destroyed building.

The publication writes that, aside from the train station and restaurant, most of the activity in the area now centers on a handful of flower and vegetable stalls in a small market that still operates beneath one of the destroyed buildings. Anastasia Primak, a 23-year-old product manager who lives in a nearby high-rise building, drinks coffee before work. She said:

"I moved to Kyiv from Nikopol two years ago because of the constant bombing. Now, in recent months, there have been massive bombings here too."

The first was a drone strike on a nearby apartment building on April 28. Primak showed a video of the destroyed buildings.

"I tell my friends it's like Chernobyl. It's getting more and more dangerous here. I sleep curled up like a fetus because I'm afraid of being hit by a drone or a missile. I want to die the first time. I don't want to lose a limb," she said.

Sitting at her flower stall, Faina Polischuk says that while most of the vendors have returned, there are no more customers.

"It's dangerous. After the last major strike in May, most of my colleagues here were crying and nervous, and for several days at first they didn't want to go back. But this is my source of income," she said.

The woman witnessed the final blow from her apartment window. Faina says she will stay, no matter what, and expresses optimism:

"I'm not afraid. If the situation worsens, I'll go to Vinnytsia my hometown." In a long-range and escalating air war between Russia and Ukraine, the damage in this single neighbourhood serves as a warning of the direction of the conflict. Kremlin officials and Vladimir Putin have flagged Russia’s intention of launching heavier and “systematic” strikes against Ukraine’s urban concentrations. The increase in Russian missile threats against Kyiv and other cities comes as Moscow has sought to take advantage of a global shortage of missile interceptors – most notably for the Patriot system – that has been exacerbated by the US-Israeli war against Iran. Volodymyr Zelenskyy has scrambled to secure promises of more interceptors, warning the leaders of the UK, France and Germany during a visit to London on Sunday of “the urgent need to scale up” Ukraine’s air defences and deep-strike capabilities.
