Improve Your Breaststroke Technique With A Good Breakthrough

To talk about the breakthrough of breaststroke, we need to talk about the angles of the breaststroke pull-out. In a previous video, we talked about the pull-out and how it consists of three parts: the dolphin kick, the arm pull, and the breaststroke kick.

The goal in a break-out is to get as close to the surface as possible before making the first stroke. Perhaps even touch it. To do that, you need to do two things.

First, push strongly away from the wall. This initial speed will allow you to go further with the pull-out and maintain a certain depth.

Second, to get the angles of the pull-out right. First, you need to push down the wall a little. You will need to figure out how much yourself because, as you can see here, it can vary depending on each swimmer. After you have pushed down and are deep in the water, with the help of the butterfly kick and the pull of your arms, you will change direction and approach the surface. You don't want to change the angle abruptly upwards or you will lose speed. Try to position yourself horizontally. The air in your lungs will gradually lift you upwards. As you get closer to the surface, you'll propel yourself forward and upward using your arms and kick in the breaststroke.

Unlike other arm strokes, in the breaststroke, you'll break the water and use your head to propel your arms forward on the first breaststroke.

Remember to keep your arms close to your body and tighten your core, as you can see Adam Peaty doing here.
