Harran Turkey – Where Abraham Lived, Moon Gods Were Worshipped & Romans Were Defeated
Today I’m taking you deep into southeastern Turkey to one of the most fascinating and overlooked places in the ancient world — Harran.
This is the city where Abraham and his family lived for many years after leaving Ur of the Chaldees. It’s where his father Terah died, and most importantly, it’s where God spoke directly to Abraham and called him to leave everything behind and journey to the Promised Land. But Harran’s story goes far beyond the Bible.
For thousands of years, this was a major centre of worship for the moon god Sin, home to one of the most important temples in the ancient world. We also stand on the very plains where, in 53 BC, the Roman general Crassus suffered one of Rome’s most humiliating defeats at the hands of the Parthians.
Later, Harran became an important centre of learning under Islamic rule, producing scholars and becoming one of the earliest centres of higher education. However, that tolerance eventually ended. Islamic rulers destroyed the last remaining temples to the moon god and suppressed the old pagan traditions. Then, in the 13th century, the Mongols sacked Harran, destroying buildings, walls, and infrastructure, leaving the once-great city in ruins from which it never fully recovered.
Today, Harran is best known for its extraordinary beehive houses — strange, conical mud-brick homes that are one of the main reasons people visit this historic place. They stand as a living link to the past.
