This video covers why democracy may be humanity's biggest obstacle in space — and what Frank White thinks we should do about it.

White doesn't mince words. Every two to four years, a new administration tears up what the last one built. For a civilization trying to expand into the cosmos, that's a structural problem no rocket can solve.

His answer: a transnational body — something like a Human Space Alliance — that can weather the political storms.

Not American. Not Chinese.

Human.

If you're in the suit, you're going up.

This isn't a new idea for White.

At the end of the first edition of his landmark book The Overview Effect, he was already calling for exactly this — a Human Space Program built on a transnational foundation, committed to expanding into the solar ecosystem with values he describes as ethical, inclusive and sustainable.

He also introduces a term he's adopted from fellow space thinker Jeff Greason: polycentric humanity — the idea of settling anywhere in the cosmos, from multiple perspectives, with multiple approaches.

Not one flag. Many.

And then there's the question of where all this thinking came from — because Frank White will be the first to tell you he was no philosophy student.

If you have questions for Frank, leave them in the comments and we will gather selected questions for a future interview.
