This ring has been a long time in the making. It’s always difficult to find time for your own projects. But since I’m leaving for a bike tour that will be going through the same area for the first half, I really wanted this completed ring along with on that journey.
The one thing I wish I could have done differently with this ring is the antique finish. If I had to do it over again, I would have not submerged the entire ring. I really didn’t want to get antique under the diamonds and sapphires on the top. I didn’t think it would be a huge deal, but it really muted the sparkle and crispness of color that it had before hand. Other than that, I really like how it all turned out!
What do you think?
Hey, Skyler here with Change You Can Wear and Sojourn Fine Jewelry,
and today we're going to be making an Oregon Crest, an Oregon Coast Trail ring.
Just to give you a bit of a backstory, two years ago I hiked the Oregon Coast Trail,
which is from Astoria down to the California border, and it was an amazing experience,
and I wanted to make this ring to remember that.
So I had some things that reminded me of the coast,
and I wanted to take this ring that I'm going to be making,
and it's going to be a square ring, so we're going to have four panels to do things on.
So the two side panels, what I'm going to be doing is,
one thing that reminds me of the coast is this dilapidated building on the way to the coast.
I've seen it for a really long time.
It used to be a diner.
I looked at the name, I can't remember exactly the name,
but I'll show you a picture of it here,
and it just reminds me of going to the beach, reminds me of going to the coast.
So that was going to be one side of the ring.
The other side is going to be a picture that I took,
actually one of the pretty places that I remember being tired,
taking this picture, and just enjoying the view.
So I'm going to engrave that picture on the other side of the ring,
and on the top, I want to try to capture what churning water looks like,
and I'm going to be doing a pave top on it,
and it's going to be irregular sizes, it's going to be sapphires and diamonds mixed,
and I think that'll look really, really cool.
And then the sides of the ring, I'm going to set a bunch of black spinel,
and that's going to remind me of the third of the Oregon Coast Trail,
which is hiking on the 101, so black top with very little shoulder.
So we're going to have diamonds right up against the edge of this ring.
I don't know, that seemed like a funny thing to me.
So with that in mind, let's listen to a little bit of Mozart,
and just watch it unfold.
