Join me for a calm early morning walk through the villages of Alton Barnes and Alton Priors in Wiltshire.
Alton Barnes and Alton Priors are neighbouring villages in Wiltshire, set within the Marlborough Downs, an area known for its wide open chalk hills and ancient landscapes. The villages have early origins and appear in the Domesday Book, reflecting their long history as rural settlements.
The surrounding land has been shaped by farming for centuries, particularly sheep grazing, which contributed to the region’s agricultural heritage. The villages are closely connected to the wider prehistoric landscape, with nearby features such as long barrows and ancient earthworks scattered across the downs.
One of the most notable landmarks nearby is the White Horse carved into the hillside above Alton Barnes, a striking figure cut into the chalk and visible from across the valley. The area is also close to the Kennet & Avon Canal, which runs through the wider landscape.
With wide skies, open views, and abundant birdlife, Alton Barnes and Alton Priors offer a peaceful and expansive feel, especially in the early morning when the downs are quiet and the day is just beginning.
