It is not known when Chopin began work on the new set of Mazurkas. He completed and published them in mid-1842 as Opus 50.

Here, Chopin's mazurkas become more expressive than reflective, expressing an increasingly nostalgic tone. Opus 50, in G major, contains the greatest number of echoes and folk references of this kind.
